Gold Medal Travel Group Limited | Professional Services | 618 | $245M | United Kingdom | IBM | IBM Cognos TM1 | EPM | 2020 |
In 2020, Gold Medal Travel Group Limited implemented IBM Cognos TM1 as an EPM solution to deliver daily reporting and analysis for finance-led decision making. The engagement was delivered by ICit Business Intelligence and targeted the need for reconciled, auditable management information across sales, margin and booking data.
IBM Cognos TM1 was configured to provide budgeting, forecasting, reporting and analysis in a single environment, with executive dashboards exposed via an intranet web page for on-line dynamic reports. The implementation included high/low performance analysis, traffic-light exception highlighting, and drilldown capability to city level using a shape object world map, enabling rapid review of key performance metrics.
The production deployment reconciled with management accounts and ingested multiple transactional data sources, including customer orders and separate booking versus travel date records, which required significant data cleansing and reconciliation work. ICit ran a two-day proof of concept that built a model from 12 months of flight transactions exceeding two million records to validate scalability and model design.
Governance combined accounting expertise and technical implementation oversight from ICit Business Intelligence to drive the reconciliation process and ensure auditability. Explicit outcomes reported include daily analysis of product sales and margin mix, the ability to test marketing promotions in near real time, and a reduction in month end close time by two weeks, with plans to extend IBM Cognos TM1 usage into operations and call centre performance management using IBM Planning Analytics TM1.

Severfield | Manufacturing | 1900 | $618M | United Kingdom | Workday | Workday Adaptive Planning (ex Adaptive Insights) | EPM | 2022 |
In 2022, Severfield implemented Workday Adaptive Planning (ex Adaptive Insights) to modernize its EPM capability across group finance, consolidation reporting, budgeting, commercial forecasting and contract reporting. Workday Adaptive Planning was selected after exhaustive assessment and testing to advance the Group’s previous Excel based operations and to provide a unified planning and analytics platform for finance and commercial stakeholders.
The phased implementation initially focused on consolidation reporting, then extended configuration to contract reporting, commercial forecasting, budgeting and scenario planning. The familiar, user friendly functionality of Workday Adaptive Planning allowed rapid configuration by the finance team, with Financial Controller Gemma Mortimer ensuring the system configuration mapped to the company’s new divisional structure and reporting requirements.
Adaptive Planning pulls live ERP data and integrates commercial and contract forecasting data to create a single authoritative dataset, removing the need to reconcile multiple schedule versions and supporting the stated objective of having one version of the truth. ICit Business Intelligence led the deployment and managed integrations and configuration, and the streamlined implementation required virtually no input from Severfield’s in house IT team.
Governance and rollout followed a phased approach with an emphasis on usability, self service reporting and visual dashboards for monthly board KPI packs. Severfield reports considerable efficiency gains in consolidation reporting, expects similar gains as contract reporting and commercial forecasting migrate to the platform, and states the system will free up time for scenario analysis and strategic decision making while fostering greater collaboration between group finance and operational finance teams.

Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute | Education | 900 | $80M | United Kingdom | Workday | Workday Adaptive Planning (ex Adaptive Insights) | EPM | 2021 |
In 2021, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute implemented Workday Adaptive Planning as its EPM solution to support Financial Planning and Reporting. The deployment was delivered in collaboration with implementation partner ICit Business Intelligence and focused on providing a single planning platform for finance and research programme managers.
Workday Adaptive Planning was configured to centralize assumptions and to enable scenario modeling and automated budget allocation, using structured assumptions sheets that feed staff salary and costs input sheets. Functional capabilities implemented include multi-scenario forecasting, centralized drivers and assumptions, automated cost allocation by activity, and routine forecast versioning to support frequent reforecast cycles.
Operational scope covered the Finance team and Research Managers running scientific programmes, enabling non-finance users to input systems, processes and activities which the EPM application converts into budgets and cost allocations. The implementation emphasized consolidation of data, workings and assumptions into one platform so leadership and finance could access a single source of planning truth during rapid changes to research focus caused by COVID-19.
Governance and process changes formalized a monthly reforecast cadence and standardized input templates, shifting conversations from finance-centric terminology to activity-based planning by research managers. The system architecture centralized assumptions management so changes cascade automatically through salary and cost models, reducing manual spreadsheet maintenance and enforcing consistent planning workflows.
The rollout delivered explicitly stated outcomes of faster, simpler and more effective forecasting and scenario analysis, improving the Institute leadership team’s ability to make timely decisions about spending and budget reallocation. Workday Adaptive Planning enabled rapid modeling of changes such as revised national insurance contribution rates at the touch of a button and supported frequent month-by-month reforecasts to reflect COVID-19 driven shifts in scientific activity.
