Construction and Real Estate | 500 | $50M | United States | Rackspace Technology | Rackspace Internet of Things & Edge | Professional Services | 2020 | In 2020, Century Engineering implemented Rackspace Internet of Things & Edge as part of a Professional Services engagement to operationalize its SmartSWM stormwater management product. The work was delivered by Onica by Rackspace Technology with Rackspace Technology as the vendor and an AWS cloud backend hosting the decision support layer. The implementation established an edge and cloud architecture that pairs on-site microcontrollers and analog sensors with a cloud hosted decision support system. Functional modules implemented include real-time remote monitoring, hyper-local weather forecast ingestion, autonomous valve control for discharge management, tamper detection and alerting, signal conditioning for analog pressure transducers, and solar generation and consumption monitoring for remote sites. Data management and backend logic were refined to compute optimal pond surface elevations and discharge rates and to push actuation commands back to site controllers. Integration work focused on strengthening the AWS environment and instrumenting secure telemetry between field devices and the cloud, with Onica defining requirements for cellular modem selection and verifying analog to digital circuitry integrity. Operational scope targeted Century Engineering’s stormwater facilities used by public and private clients to meet EPA compliance monitoring requirements, while the company retained engineering oversight from its Hunt Valley, Maryland headquarters. Governance and rollout followed a two phase engagement model, first consolidating and hardening field hardware and electronics, then enhancing cloud architecture, alerting, and backend automation. Explicit outcomes cited include improved system reliability and security, higher pollutant removal performance, reduced land footprint for stormwater facilities through active volume management, and the initiation of machine learning model development for future predictive control.

Construction and Real Estate | 500 | $50M | United States | Amazon Web Services (AWS) | Amazon EC2 | Application Hosting and Computing Services | 2021 | In 2021, Century Engineering implemented Amazon EC2 as the core compute layer for its SmartSWM™ back-end decision support system, deployed as an Application Hosting and Computing Services solution on AWS. The project targeted commercial readiness for an IoT driven stormwater management product that ingests hyper local weather forecasts, monitors on site sensor telemetry, and issues autonomous control commands to release valves to meet regulatory performance objectives. Onica by Rackspace Technology led a two phase engagement that combined cloud native development, Internet of Things and edge improvement, and data management refinement. Amazon EC2 instances host the decision support engine and data processing pipelines, while Onica refined the back end logic to compute optimal water surface elevations and discharge rates, and to orchestrate remote actuation commands. Hardware work included custom microcontroller configurations, analog to digital signal conditioning to manage noisy pressure transducer outputs, tamper detection and alerting, and cellular modem guidance for resilient connectivity. The implementation integrates on site microcontrollers and environmental sensors with cloud compute on Amazon EC2, supporting telemetry ingestion, solar generation and consumption monitoring, water temperature sampling, and forecast feed consumption. Operational coverage is oriented to Century Engineering projects for public and private clients, with the Cloud hosted back end providing remote access for monitoring, parameter adjustment, and automated control of distributed stormwater facilities. Governance and rollout followed a phased remediation and hardening approach where Onica improved system architecture, security posture, and scalability of the SmartSWM™ service. Outcomes reported in the engagement include improved reliability, increased security, and a scalable production environment, and Century Engineering has begun layering machine learning model development on top of the Amazon EC2 hosted data platform to support predictive facility behavior modeling.

Professional Services | 900 | $500M | Canada | Amazon Web Services (AWS) | Amazon EC2 | Application Hosting and Computing Services | 2017 | In 2017, Cando Rail & Terminals implemented Amazon EC2 as part of a broader serverless and cloud-native re-architecture to support its Quasar IoT supply chain platform. The deployment targeted Application Hosting and Computing Services to ingest, process and push IoT sensor data from train carriages through to customers, aligning the Company Application Category Business Function relationship around real-time railcar tracking and shipment monitoring. The implementation combined serverless components with managed compute, employing Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, Amazon CloudFront, Amazon ECS, Amazon S3, AWS SNS, Amazon Certificate Manager, Amazon RDS and Amazon EC2 to handle ingestion, processing, storage and distribution. Workstreams included infrastructure as code, automation and CI/CD best practices to accelerate change cycles and standardize deployments across the Quasar platform. Onica by Rackspace Technology acted as the SI, conducting an architecture audit and executing an Onica Teams engagement that provided a dedicated cloud team and ongoing operational support. Integrations were explicit, including forwarding existing AWS SNS topics into the new environment to preserve data flows, and coordinating with internal development teams and multiple external vendors to bridge modern AWS services with Cando’s field sensor ecosystem. Governance and operational controls were restructured to consolidate monitoring and alerting from seven or eight separate tools into a unified alarming model, and to implement security and CI/CD controls across the pipeline. Cost governance was addressed through rightsizing and ramp-down strategies in AWS, combined with Onica’s 24x7x365 network operations center for continuous monitoring and iterative optimization. The combined move to a serverless-centric architecture and the use of Amazon EC2 where appropriate resulted in lower costs and reduced latency, improved architecture and security, and more predictable, reliable operations. Explicit outcomes included a reduction in deployment time from 90 seconds to less than two seconds, and an environment positioned to support larger customers and more stable IoT data delivery.
