SWK Stadtwerke Krefeld | Utilities | 3400 | $1.5B | Germany | SAP | SAP HCM (HR) | Core HR | 2007 |
In 2007, SWK Stadtwerke Krefeld implemented SAP HCM (HR) as part of a broader SAP applications rollout. The SAP HCM (HR) deployment is in the Core HR category and was provisioned to support approximately 5,000 users across SWK, its subsidiaries and external clients, addressing regulatory reporting and workforce management needs in the liberalized German energy market.
The solution was deployed on an IBM-centric virtualized infrastructure, using IBM System p5 590 servers with PowerVM Hypervisor, multiple logical partitions and Virtual I/O servers to share physical I/O adapters, and IBM System Storage DS8000 disk arrays. IBM DB2 9 served as the database platform and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager provided backup, archive and restore services, with twin data centers and automated tape library offsite storage to meet better than 99.9 percent availability commitments.
SAP HCM (HR) was implemented alongside SAP ERP 6.0 and SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence to deliver centralized human resources processes, personnel and workforce reporting, and integration into the SAP-based Service Desk for incident and configuration visibility. The architecture used dedicated LPARs to prioritize and control reporting workloads and dynamic resource assignment to match processor capacity with HR processing peaks, enabling rapid setup of test and project environments.
Sirius Consulting led the introduction of ITIL-aligned governance and process changes, formalizing the Service Desk as a single point of contact and institutionalizing incident and configuration management workflows, with planned extensions into financial, service level and change management. Governance emphasized measurable service level reporting to satisfy Bundesnetzagentur requirements and to support competitive market operations.
Documented outcomes included enhanced system performance and faster service provisioning due to virtualization, higher CPU utilization and more cost effective hardware use. DB2 Deep Compression reduced the SAP BI database by 65 percent from 1.2TB to 380GB and reduced the SAP ERP database by 45 percent from 420GB to 230GB, with overall DB2 operation performance improving by approximately 5 percent.

SWK Stadtwerke Krefeld | Utilities | 3400 | $1.5B | Germany | SAP | SAP ERP ECC 6.0 | ERP Financial | 2007 |
In 2007, SWK Stadtwerke Krefeld implemented SAP ERP ECC 6.0 as its core ERP Financial system to address regulatory requirements and the liberalized German energy market. The implementation targeted roughly 5,000 SAP users across the holding, its subsidiaries and external clients, and was sized to support billing, reporting and customer-facing service processes required by the Bundesnetzagentur specifications.
The deployment of SAP ERP ECC 6.0 included functional components for project management, human resources, SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence, the SAP Utilities portfolio and the Waste and Recycling solution portfolio, providing detailed reporting and operational workflows for billing and service delivery. The runtime architecture was centered on two IBM System p5 590 servers using advanced virtualization, with each server hosting between 15 and 18 logical partitions, approximately 50 percent allocated to production SAP applications and the remainder to test, QA and project work. Virtual I O servers were used to consolidate physical I O adapters across LPARs, enabling rapid provisioning of test environments and dynamic processor assignment via the PowerVM Hypervisor.
Storage and database integration supported the SAP stack through IBM System Storage DS8000 arrays and IBM DB2 9 as the primary database, with DB2 tightly integrated into SAP for database administration and compression. Backup and archive services were delivered by IBM Tivoli Storage Manager running on dedicated servers, with daily incremental and weekly full backups written to an automated tape library and tapes stored offsite, and the SAP BI and ERP databases were placed in twin data centers to meet availability commitments. Specific LPARs were provisioned to prioritize reporting workloads and to release compute resources once reporting windows closed.
Governance and operational process changes were driven by an ITIL adoption program assisted by Sirius Consulting, with an SAP-based Service Desk established as the single point of contact for incident and configuration management. The ITIL alignment covered incident management and configuration management initially, with plans to extend processes and workflows to financial management, service level management and change management under the same SAP operational framework.
Measured system outcomes reported as part of the program included substantial database compression using DB2 Deep Compression, with the SAP BI database reduced from 1.2 terabytes to 380 gigabytes and the SAP ERP database reduced from 420 gigabytes to 230 gigabytes, and an overall DB2 operations performance improvement of approximately 5 percent. The infrastructure delivered higher CPU utilization, faster non-disruptive service provisioning, and non-disruptive scalability through activation of spare processors and IBM Capacity Upgrade on Demand, while hardware, software and services were packaged under a single financing arrangement with IBM Global Financing.
