Backup and archive services were delivered by IBM Tivoli Storage Manager running on dedicated servers, with daily incremental and weekly full backups written to an automated tape library and tapes stored offsite, and the SAP BI and ERP databases were placed in twin data centers to meet availability commitments. Specific LPARs were provisioned to prioritize reporting workloads and to release compute resources once reporting windows closed. Governance and operational process changes were driven by an ITIL adoption program assisted by Sirius Consulting, with an SAP-based Service Desk established as the single point of contact for incident and configuration management. The ITIL alignment covered incident management and configuration management initially, with plans to extend processes and workflows to financial management, service level management and change management under the same SAP operational framework. Measured system outcomes reported as part of the program included substantial database compression using DB2 Deep Compression, with the SAP BI database reduced from 1.2 terabytes to 380 gigabytes and the SAP ERP database reduced from 420 gigabytes to 230 gigabytes, and an overall DB2 operations performance improvement of approximately 5 percent.
