In 2022, Aalen University of Applied Sciences deployed Siemens Teamcenter for Product Lifecycle Management. Siemens Teamcenter is used alongside NX software within the Siemens Xcelerator business platform to deliver hands-on PDM and model-based systems design instruction across mechanical engineering bachelor and master curricula.
The implementation focuses on core Product Lifecycle Management capabilities, explicitly using Teamcenter for product data management functions such as importing external CAD data and nontechnical information, revisioning and approval workflows, and variant management. Coursework requires students to create 150 percent product structures in NX, capture variant matrices in Teamcenter, define configuration rules, and link features and rules to the product to produce configured BOMs that include software code sets as CAD files.
Operational coverage spans the Mechanical Engineering/Development: Design and Simulation bachelor course and the Data Management in Product Development and Production master course, with six-semester team projects including gearbox design, radio-controlled vehicles, drones and a configurable 4-axis robot that culminate in additive manufacturing. The deployment is classroom and project centered, embedding Siemens Teamcenter into a PDM laboratory that combines four weeks of theoretical instruction with subsequent problem-based design and verification exercises using NX for CAD and Teamcenter for PDM and configuration.
Governance and workflow instruction are part of the curriculum, students are trained to use Teamcenter approval workflows and document revision controls as operational practice, and are required to perform quality reviews and repeat change cycles that mirror industrial PDM processes. Results explicitly reported by the university include provided students with holistic systems design engineering skills, the use of problem-based projects to prepare students for complex engineering software environments, and empowerment of future engineers to tackle complex mechatronic challenges using Siemens Teamcenter and NX.
