| Ethereum Foundation | Legacy | Ethereum Platform | Blockchain Platform | Blockchain | n/a | 2019 | 2019 |
In 2019 Austrian Post implemented the Ethereum Platform as a Blockchain Platform solution to create and issue the world’s first blockchain stamp, pairing physical postage with an on-chain digital asset. The initiative was publicly presented on June 11, 2019 by the Head of Product Management at Austrian Post AG, Stefan Nemeth, and positioned the Austrian Post Ethereum Platform Blockchain Platform implementation at the intersection of mail delivery and digital collectibles.
The deployment tokenized postage items so each physical stamp was linked to a unique on-chain asset, enabling wallet-based ownership and transferability. The implementation included QR code activation, scratch-off secret codes embedded on a bank card style block, and issuance of a digital complement preserved in a user-owned wallet, with transfers and transaction acceptance recorded on the Ethereum blockchain via the Ethereum Platform.
Austrian Post worked with blockchain experts from Capacity for the crypto stamp development while earlier commercial integrations with Bitpanda and Coinfinity established broader crypto retail channels in branches. Operational coverage focused on Austrian Post AG branches and the collector and mailing customer base in Austria, using a limited production run of 150000 stamps issued in five color scarcity tiers to manage provenance and rarity on-chain.
Governance and rollout were managed through product management at Austrian Post with a combined physical production and on-chain minting workflow, including physical detachment at an encoded breaking point for postal use and wallet handover for the digital collectible. Outcomes explicitly reported include rapid secondary market activity, with complete sets selling for around 999 USD on eBay and individual stamps achieving sales above 1000 Euros in Austria, underscoring collector demand for the tokenized postal issuance.
