The deployment was executed through the Information Systems infrastructure and integration organization, concentrating on hospital and enterprise clinical integration rather than a single point solution. The Oracle Cerner Millennium Electronic Health Record implementation covered standard EHR capabilities such as clinical documentation, order management, patient administration, and results reporting while serving as the central clinical data store for integrated systems.
The implementation emphasized interface architecture and message orchestration, with technical teams engineering new XML and HL7 interfaces based on user needs and negotiated HL7 specifications. A technical specialist role led interface design and implementation activities, creating and validating message mappings, test plans, and README documentation. The team also designed, programmed, and implemented a SQL transaction count database supported by Perl scripts to instrument transaction volumes and support operational monitoring.
Operational integration included ongoing support and maintenance of more than five thousand interfaces between Epic, Soarian, Cerner Millennium, and other clinical systems, processing millions of transactions per week. Interface operations were supported by rotating 24/7 on-call pager duty and daily monitoring in coordination with the Operations Center, emphasizing message throughput and error condition resolution. The implementation therefore functioned as a multi-system interoperability layer, with Cerner Millennium as a primary clinical application within that interconnected ecosystem.
