In 2019 Capital Blue Cross renewed and expanded its use of Apixio, deploying the Apixio HCC Identifier as a component of its AI Healthcare Analytics tooling within risk adjustment operations. The implementation emphasized AI-assisted coding reviews and second-pass chart review workflows to supplement the insurer’s existing clinical review processes.
Apixio HCC Identifier was implemented as an AI-powered coding and QA application, providing machine learning driven identification of Hierarchical Condition Categories and evidence locations within patient charts. The solution surfaces specific pages and paragraphs for reviewer attention, supporting targeted clinical validation rather than full-chart manual review, and the platform was configured to support second-pass chart review processes used by the risk adjustment team.
Operationally the deployment served the Capital Blue Cross risk adjustment and coding quality functions, integrating the Apixio application into chart review workflows to ensure submitted codes were supported by clinical documentation. The tool reduced reliance on lengthy manual review by directing reviewers to high-probability documentation, and it was used as an ongoing augmentation to existing coder and clinician review activities.
Governance and rollout began with a pilot renewal that produced rapid adoption, after which the program scaled across the team, establishing Apixio as a collaborative risk adjustment partner for Capital Blue Cross. Customer service and engagement from Apixio were noted as significantly positive, reinforcing operational adoption and ongoing use of the Apixio application within the insurer’s AI Healthcare Analytics portfolio.
