In 2011, Celanese implemented Thermo Scientific SampleManager LIMS for Laboratory Management, targeting R&D instrument integration and manufacturing quality data capture within its manufacturing IT environment. The deployment centered on instrument result ingestion and centralized sample and test record management to support environmental health and safety and laboratory operations. Technical implementation included configuration of SampleManager VGL workflows and a database architecture based on Oracle 9i, 10g and 11g, with reporting delivered through Sybase Infomaker 9. The program included an upgrade path, specifically providing strategy and implementation for a LIMS upgrade from SampleManager LIMS 2004R2 to 9.2.1, and custom integration code developed in C# for files and data transformation. Integrations were explicit and practical, instrument result files were parsed and routed into Microsoft SharePoint and Thermo Scientific SampleManager LIMS as part of an R&D-focused solution, and a separate SOX related global in-plant time and attendance reporting solution was implemented that integrated with Lenel OnGuard for badging and alarm monitoring. Work spanned manufacturing IT, R&D and EHS functional areas, and the implementation was executed by an internationally distributed team with a single BA and developer leading the R&D instrument integration workstream. Governance included a defined upgrade and release strategy, coordination between manufacturing IT and lab operations, and compliance-focused reporting for SOX related controls tied to the time and attendance solution.
