In 2015, Continental Resources implemented Microsoft Power BI to centralize Analytics and BI for Reservoir Engineering, Corporate Finance and Corporate Development. Microsoft Power BI was deployed to support database management, reporting, evaluation, analysis, budgeting and reserves estimation across those departments.
The implementation focused on building report and visualization layers in Microsoft Power BI that consumed curated data models and complex queries maintained in Microsoft Excel and Access. Teams used Microsoft Power BI for well performance analysis and Aries database surveillance, with dashboards and visualizations intended to surface discrepancies and trends for economic evaluations, forecasting and field studies.
Integrations and data consolidation centered on the Corporate Aries database and coordination with outside operator databases used in valuing potential acquisitions. The Power BI implementation supported reconciliation workflows between Aries, Prodview and Bolo, and coordinated information from internal and external databases into standardized report formats for review by Reservoir Engineers, the Reserves Manager and Finance staff.
Governance workstreams established control and reconciliation over Aries data, maintained current and historical reserve databases and supported the Reserves Manager in compiling the quarterly reserves report. The scope included maintaining monthly and annual production forecasts for well productivity, curtailment schedules, shut ins and development turn in line schedules, supporting the Finance Department in monthly corporate finance model updates and annual budget setting, and managing annual EIA reporting of historic well and field production.
