In 2015, Costain Group implemented SAP Concur Expense to address corporate expense management needs as part of a coordinated Timesheet and Expense rollout. The SAP Concur Expense deployment supported the Expense Management category workstream and was aligned with concurrent development of a customer billing module.
The implementation encompassed design, development, testing and support across multiple sectors of Costain Group, with explicit workstreams for Timesheet and Expense modules and follow up customer billing functionality. SAP Concur Expense was configured to support standard expense reporting and approval workflows consistent with Expense Management practice, and the project included system testing and end user rollout planning. An internal automation team was created to manage ongoing configuration and process orchestration.
A key technical signal was a purpose built integration into JD Edwards E1, which linked Concur expense records to Costain billing and financial posting processes for downstream accounting. The SAP Concur Expense integration into JD Edwards E1 was built and tested as part of the overall rollout. The solution now supports around 3500 users across the country and spans operational departments responsible for timesheets, expense submission and customer billing reconciliation.
Governance and operational change included centralized testing, phased sector rollouts and ongoing support led by the internal automation solutions team. That team worked with a third party robotics partner to develop and deploy robotic process automation for repetitive tasks, which was reported as highly successful in saving people time and enabling remote execution of routine work. Ongoing responsibilities include support, automation maintenance and process improvement aligned to Expense Management and billing workflows.

Configuration work focused on career site branding, application forms, and stage-based hiring workflows aligned with Talent Acquisition requirements.

The implementation leveraged vendor-hosted career site components to deliver a consistent candidate experience and to feed pipelines used by hiring managers and recruiters.

In 2015, Costain Group implemented COINS ERP. The deployment of COINS ERP supported Construction ERP functions for Costain Ltd project accounting on major projects including CVB JV Tideway East and the Bond Street TFL Upgrade, and it was adopted by finance and project delivery teams to centralize transaction processing and month end control.
COINS ERP was configured to handle core construction accounting workflows, including processing material and plant invoices and proforma, bank and payment reconciliations, month end reports and reserves, balancing client month end and company month end, and accounts receivable activities such as credit control. The installation also supported payroll for weekly and monthly cycles including expenses, timesheet management, salary uplift, cost coding and item allocation, GL data reporting and analysis, journaling, profit and loss management, forecasting costs and spreading depreciation.
Operational use shows COINS ERP was used alongside E1 across 2015 to 2017, with teams executing payment runs for BAC and manual and international payments, managing purchase card activity, generating subcontractor remittances and authorizing payments. The application environment covered finance, payroll and project cost control workflows on site and corporate accounting functions, driving GL reallocation decisions and balance sheet monitoring.
Governance and process workflows emphasized controlled authorizations and month end coordination between client and company reporting cycles, with responsibilities distributed across accounts assistants and project finance staff for credit control, reconciliations, forecasting and approval of payments. COINS ERP served as the centralized Construction ERP platform to instrument cost tracking, reporting and operational finance procedures for project delivery and corporate finance.
