In 2024, DTE Energy implemented SAP S/4 HANA as its core ERP Financial platform, replacing SAP ERP ECC 6.0. The project was delivered in partnership with Infosys and SAP, and discussions during the rollout emphasized SAP’s business AI strategy and the role of intelligent technologies in the utilities sector. The implementation targeted the finance organization across DTE Energy, aligning accounting workflows with a modern S/4 HANA data model and in-memory processing. Deployment planning accounted for integration into DTE Energy’s existing SAP landscape and for staged cutover of financial modules.
SAP S/4 HANA was configured to support standard ERP Financial capabilities, including general ledger consolidation, accounts payable, accounts receivable, period end financial close, tax accounting, and embedded reporting and analytics. Configuration activities focused on ledger design, chart of accounts rationalization, financial close automation, and the enablement of embedded analytics for operational and management reporting. The narrative from the engagement highlighted opportunities to apply SAP’s business AI strategy to finance processes, for example for intelligent data extraction and augmented financial insights.
Operational integration emphasized continuity with DTE Energy’s SAP ecosystem, preserving master data consistency while transitioning transaction processing to SAP S/4 HANA. The scope covered corporate finance, accounting, and treasury functions, with workstreams to align master data, chart of accounts, and financial reporting hierarchies. Interfaces and batch integrations were scoped to keep downstream financial consumers aligned during and after the S/4 HANA cutover.
Governance and rollout were executed in collaboration with Infosys as the system integrator, with joint SAP and Infosys governance forums to manage configuration, testing, and change control. Process standardization and finance workflow restructuring were part of the program, alongside change management to onboard finance teams to S/4 HANA operational practices. The program was positioned to drive digital transformation, operational excellence, and AI-driven innovation in DTE Energy’s finance organization as articulated by SAP and Infosys.

| SAP | Legacy | SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central | Core HR | HCM | n/a | 2010 | 2010 |
In 2010, DTE Energy implemented SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central to establish a centralized Core HR platform supporting HR administration across its corporate environment. The deployment emphasized a configuration-driven Employee Central foundation integrated with broader SuccessFactors capabilities, and the implementation footprint included modules for Performance, Goals, Succession, Learning, Recruiting, Onboarding, Mobile, Compensation, and Time & Attendance. Staffing and operational coverage for the platform included an on-site HR Systems Administrator role based in Detroit, with hybrid work requirements and emergency response expectations tied to business continuity for utility operations.
Configuration and operations were managed through formal workbooks and a maintained data dictionary, with the HR Systems Admin responsible for daily administration, second-tier escalation support, and advanced user support for HR end-users. The HR Systems Administrator role executed functional configuration and system maintenance, created and updated SOPs and training materials for SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central and adjacent modules, and led biannual release specification reviews and change management activities aligned to planned SuccessFactors updates. Agile collaboration patterns were used in solution delivery, with product owner and scrum master interaction to prioritize and complete commitments.
Integrations were operated as a mix of in-house integrations and connections to third party vendor solutions, and the implementation acknowledged common integration concepts including flat file exchange, APIs, and connectors as part of the environment design. Operational stakeholders included HR Centers of Excellence, internal IT, Business Analytics & Solutions, Data Security, and Regulatory groups, all of which contributed to intake, prioritization, and governance of HR technology demand. The environment was managed to reflect HR processes, and governance activities included intake and backlog management, stakeholder communication for releases, and coordination with vendors and technical teams for system changes.
Day-to-day governance and support workflows centered on triage and escalation, training and documentation, and cross-functional coordination to resolve functionality issues and maintain system alignment with HR processes. The HR Systems Administrator role served as the liaison between HR COEs and technical teams, maintaining configuration records, managing integrations, and ensuring operational readiness for biannual SuccessFactors releases, while contributing to the HR Technology Solutions product backlog and portfolio governance.
