| SAP | Legacy | SAP ERP ECC 6.0 | ERP Financial | ERP Financial Management | n/a | 2006 | 2006 |
In 2006, FirstEnergy implemented SAP ERP ECC 6.0. The deployment was executed as an ERP Financial initiative to consolidate billing, collections, and customer revenue operations on an SAP-centric platform supporting enterprise utilities billing and finance functions.
The implementation configured core Sales and Distribution capabilities alongside the SAP Utilities module CCS, CRM-driven collections workflows with flexible dunning, and financial accounting controls including FICA and resource-related billing. SAP ERP ECC 6.0 was used to instrument SD-led customer billing workflows and to surface arrears reporting through the NetWeaver portal for Revenue Operations.
The SAP landscape employed a split-instance architecture with three production boxes, CCS East covering Pennsylvania and New Jersey, CCS West covering Ohio, and a Shared Services instance for core support modules, aligning technical topology to regional operational coverage. Integrations included the Consumer Products interface integrated into SAP Utility Billing to enable monthly billing on the electric bill and to remove an error-prone external Access database, and SD integrations supporting batch reporting processes and production support for billing operations.
Governance and operationalization drew on prior SAP 4.6 experience implemented using ASAP methodology, with the ECC 6.0 upgrade adding production support structures for SD and FICA and process-level changes in collections through CRM worklist processing. The implementation delivered arrears reporting in NetWeaver and direct monthly billing capability for the Consumer Products group, operating against a customer base exceeding 4.5 million and utility revenues reported at 11 billion.

The deployment positioned SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central at the center of FirstEnergy’s HR landscape, with the HRIT team operating as the primary system owner for configuration and ongoing support.
The implementation encompassed a broad set of talent modules including Employee Profile, Performance, Goals, Development, Succession, Calibration, Recruiting, RMK, Onboarding, and Learning Management System, with analytics surfaced through ad-hoc reporting, ORD, BIRT and Dashboards. System configuration work focused on core HR data model design, security role configuration, and report development to support HR, talent, recruiting and learning workflows.
Operational coverage was delivered by FirstEnergy’s HRIT team, which provided end user support, managed system configuration changes, and produced bespoke reports and dashboards for HR stakeholders. Analytics capabilities were integrated into operational processes via ORD and BIRT reporting routines, supporting talent review, recruiting intake and learning administration use cases.
Governance included a managed quarterly release process overseen by HRIT, with formal change management for configuration updates and release testing. The HRIT role also included ongoing guidance on cloud HR system strategy to align SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central with FirstEnergy’s enterprise HR and talent management functions.

In 2017, FirstEnergy implemented ABB Ability Ellipse APM to centralize Asset Performance Management across its utility operations. ABB Ability Ellipse APM was deployed to provide a unified platform for asset information and to standardize maintenance planning and condition-based approaches within FirstEnergy.
The implementation was configured to deliver core Asset Performance Management capabilities, including asset master data management, work order and maintenance planning workflows, equipment history and condition monitoring dashboards, and failure mode tracking that supports lifecycle planning. Configuration emphasized asset hierarchies and maintenance scheduling to align planning teams and field crews with operational reliability objectives.
Operational coverage targeted enterprise utility functions, bringing maintenance planning, field operations, and asset engineering into a common application context across FirstEnergy's U.S. footprint. The solution was positioned to support routine and condition-driven maintenance processes, and to provide a single source of asset truth for operational decision making.
Governance for the ABB Ability Ellipse APM rollout included standardizing maintenance workflows and establishing asset data governance to improve master data quality and work execution consistency. Change activities focused on process alignment between planners and technicians, phased adoption of application modules, and embedding Ellipse as the primary system for asset performance management.
