In 2020 Fortescue Metals Group implemented SAP S/4 HANA as its core enterprise platform, establishing a SAP S/4 HANA ERP Financial foundation to support growth, simplification of core processes and future diversification into green energy. The program was initiated to resolve existing business pain points, improve data capabilities and create operational agility across finance and procurement functions.
Fortescue executed a SAP ECC to SAP S/4 HANA conversion from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 using a Bluefield migration methodology, migrating ten years worth of historical data while transforming selected data objects to the new S/4 data model. The deployment was provisioned as a global SAP S/4 HANA instance hosted on the AWS cloud, and included a large scale Fiori Launch Pad rollout with 85 activated Fiori applications and 95 webgui applications.
Functional modules and capability changes focused on procurement and finance, including the development and rollout of a custom Fiori My Purchase Requisition application that impacted more than 1500 users, enablement of Joint Venture Accounting and Group Reporting, a change of controlling currency reporting to US Dollars and expansion of profit centre usage from one to over 60 profit centres. Enterprise structures were renewed and chart of accounts and cost centre designs were adjusted to support consolidated group finance operations.
Fortescue partnered with Capgemini and other tier one vendors for implementation and delivery, adapting governance and delivery practices to remote working conditions during the pandemic and completing migration activities in February 2022. Stakeholder communication and engagement were emphasized to mitigate disruption and drive ownership of the implementation, while process redesigns shifted finance workflows toward more forward looking planning and reporting.
As reported by Fortescue, outcomes include improved user experience and streamlined data consolidation, reduction in manual handling, and enhanced data accuracy and visibility, providing a cloud based foundation for future scalability. Fortescue positions the SAP S/4 HANA ERP Financial implementation as an enabler for ongoing digital finance strategy and for supporting the enterprise as it expands into renewable hydrogen and other green product operations.

In 2018, Fortescue Metals Group implemented SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central as its Core HR application. The deployment placed SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central at the center of People Services administration for roles such as the People Services Coordinator based in Perth, with explicit responsibility for maintaining personnel and organisational records.
The implementation focused on core personnel and organisational capabilities, including creation and maintenance of SuccessFactors personnel data, management of SuccessFactors organisational data for positions and departments, onboarding and offboarding workflows, generation of employment contracts and letters, and in-system reporting. Functional activities documented in role requirements include validating and processing employee condition changes such as transfers, promotions, and roster adjustments, reflecting configuration of position management, employee lifecycle, and reporting modules within the Core HR category.
Operationally the rollout required coordination across multiple internal systems, with People Services staff held accountable for the accuracy and integrity of employee data retained in multiple systems. The job specification notes SuccessFactors experience as essential and lists SAP HR PA and OM experience, indicating continuity of HR administrative skills and coexistence considerations between SAP HR domain knowledge and SuccessFactors configuration.
Governance and workflow controls were formalized at the People Services level, with accountability for data accuracy, confidentiality, customer service handling of manager and employee requests, and meeting individual and team KPIs. Regular report generation from SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central and structured personnel data maintenance were core operational controls driving day to day HR administrative processes.

In 2018, Fortescue Metals Group implemented Tableau, an Analytics and BI application, to establish a centralized visualization and reporting platform. The deployment focused on delivering governed dashboards and self service analytics capabilities to support data-driven decision making across the organization.
Configuration emphasized published workbooks, centralized data sources, and role-based access controls, with Tableau used for interactive dashboards, scheduled reporting, and ad hoc exploration. Implementation work aligned with standard Analytics and BI functional workflows, including semantic data modeling, KPI definition, and dashboard lifecycle management.
The technical architecture integrated Tableau with Snowflake for analytical warehousing and AWS Lambda for event-driven data ingestion and transformation, reflecting skills listed by in-house data engineering staff in database design and cloud-based ETL. Data engineering ownership of database design and pipeline automation was a core part of the implementation, enabling Tableau to source governed data sets and support repeatable refresh schedules.
Operational coverage concentrated on data engineering and analytics teams for platform governance, with publishing and consumption workflows extended to business users for enterprise reporting. Governance provisions included controlled data sources, published dashboards, and a centralized content management approach to maintain consistency in enterprise visualizations.
