In 2013, Howarth Timber Group implemented OpenECX eInvoicing for AP Automation. The Howarth Timber Group is the UK’s largest privately owned timber company with more than 1,000 specialists and a network of 33 timber and builders’ merchant branches, and the initiative targeted increased invoice processing efficiency and streamlined supplier payments across the group.
OpenECX eInvoicing was configured to automatically convert and validate PDF invoices into XML, automatically generate and email validated invoice files, and deliver structured invoice data for downstream processing. Implemented functional capabilities include PDF to XML conversion, invoice validation rules, automated document generation and supplier onboarding workflows consistent with AP Automation requirements.
The implementation integrated processed invoice files directly into the Kerridge K8 core Financial System so invoices enter existing accounts payable workflows without manual rekeying. Operational scope focused on finance and accounts payable across the business, providing a third submission path for suppliers alongside paper and conventional EDI and targeting the approximately 85 percent of suppliers not on conventional EDI.
Deployment was executed on a phased basis with active supplier onboarding and process changes to validation and receipt workflows. More than 90 suppliers were onboarded during initial phases, and those suppliers experienced invoices processed and validated quickly and reliably, with PDF originated documents handled operationally as if they were conventional EDI data files.

In 2014, Howarth Timber Group implemented IRIS Cascade Payroll. The IRIS Cascade Payroll deployment supported Payroll operations for the distribution business, processing payroll for over 750 employees at the Howarth Timber & Building Supplies Limited Leeds site and aligning payroll with HR and Finance functional workflows.
The implementation configured core Payroll modules including employee master data, starters and leavers processing from start to finish, statutory pay scheduling for SMP and SSP, payroll runs and period close, and statutory reporting such as P11D production. Regular payroll reporting capability was used to produce staff turnover and costing reports to support finance reconciliations and operational costing reviews.
Operational integration included collating and validating data feeds from a time and attendance system and incorporating pension and other benefits submission workflows, while day to day operations required handling complex employee queries and exceptions. Governance centered on defined end to end payroll procedures and procedural ownership across Payroll, HR and Finance, with site level operational coverage at Leeds and centralized payroll execution consistent with the Payroll category.

| Kerridge Commercial Systems Limited | Legacy | Kerridge k8 ERP | Distribution ERP | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2004 | 2005 |
In 2004, Howarth Timber Group implemented Kerridge k8 ERP as their core Distribution ERP, deploying the system branch-by-branch over several months to the merchant part of the business. The rollout was owned by Group Information Systems Manager Paul Cornford and his team, who ran IT infrastructure and led selection and implementation for the trading operations.
The implementation prioritized modules aligned to a short list of must haves using the MoSCoW principle, with explicit emphasis on robust financial controls, flexible trading mechanisms, and stock control. Kerridge k8 ERP was configured to provide ledger-driven financial management separate from trading transaction detail, trading and sales workflows that supported existing merchant sales patterns, and inventory control functionality that introduced accurate stock figures and suggested ordering driven from demand and core stock requirements.
Integrations and operational coverage focused on reducing collateral systems, in particular around EDI, and enabling online trading and near continuous availability for customers. The platform supported a 24/7 operation for online sales by shrinking the overnight blackout window, and data mining and business intelligence capabilities within Kerridge k8 ERP were used to compare and replicate branch performance across the group.
Governance and change management were structured around involving hands-on business users in requirements definition, anticipating training needs, and executing a staged branch-by-branch rollout. Selection and configuration decisions were driven by operational users and the finance team, ensuring controls and trading behavior met departmental needs while the IT team managed implementation pacing and stabilization.
Outcomes reported from the deployment and later upgrade include the introduction of robust financial controls, a flexible system that supports group trading mechanisms, accurate stock figures relied on by sales, reduced reliance on external EDI systems, a near continuous online sales capability, optimized stock levels through suggested ordering, and enhanced business intelligence enabling replication of best practice across branches. Howarth Timber later upgraded to K8 Babbage to obtain additional functionality and to further reduce the overnight blackout to approximately 45 minutes.
