In 2023, KeyBank deployed Workday Accounting Center as part of a broader Workday Financial Management initiative, using the ERP Financial application to modernize core finance and accounting functions. The program was executed with PwC as the implementation partner and positioned the Workday Accounting Center within a unified, cloud native Workday platform that included Workday Financial Management, Workday Adaptive Planning and Workday Prism Analytics.
The implementation centralized accounting rules and rationalized the operating model, moving finance work away from manual spreadsheets and toward configured automation and standardized journalization. Workday Accounting Center was configured to centralize accounting rules and support automated financial consolidation, while Adaptive Planning handled budgeting and planning workflows and Prism Analytics served as an expanding finance data hub. The program materially reduced organizational complexity, lowering cost centers from 18,000 to 1,300 and shrinking financial operational reports from 1,400 to 100, and it automated SOX controls to 40 percent up from 17 percent.
Integrations focused on unifying workforce and financial data within the existing Workday estate, leveraging Workday HCM data alongside the new finance modules to create a common finance data model. Workday Prism Analytics was extended to ingest disparate systems and data feeds, enabling consistent reporting and a single source of truth for finance users. The architecture emphasized cloud based, platform centric dataflows and a centralized accounting layer provided by Workday Accounting Center to simplify downstream reporting and analysis.
Governance and rollout followed a two step approach, first centralizing and rationalizing processes and then fully digitizing the operating model, with PwC and KeyBank teams jointly driving configuration, testing and change management. Training and upskilling were delivered through workshops, videos and in person software testing sessions, and business processes were aligned to Workday leading practices to enable automation of consolidation and to shorten reporting cycles. The program also addressed Federal Reserve reporting requirements through revised transaction processing and consolidated data models.
Outcomes reported by KeyBank include a shift in finance capacity toward higher value analysis, with the workforce moving from predominantly transaction processing to more strategic activities, and an expectation to continue automating close and reporting processes as subsequent phases progress. Workday Accounting Center sits centrally within the ERP Financial stack to support ongoing automation, consistent data access and broader finance transformation across KeyBank.
