| SAP | SAP ERP ECC 6.0 | SAP S/4 HANA | ERP Financial | ERP Financial Management | n/a | 2024 | 2024 |
In 2024, Medtronic implemented SAP S/4 HANA, migrating from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 to consolidate core financial processes under an ERP Financial program. The SAP S/4 HANA deployment targets enterprise financial management and adjacent process areas, and the program is structured to support Medtronic’s multi‑site US operations including Mounds View, Fridley (OHQ), Irvine, Jacksonville, Boston and additional Minnesota locations, reflecting coordination across finance, supply chain and manufacturing technology teams for a company of approximately 50,000 employees.
The implementation includes explicit configuration and development disciplines aligned to SAP S/4 HANA technical patterns, covering FI/CO financials and related SD and MM process areas, with operational coverage extending into Production Planning and Plant Maintenance. Technical workstreams emphasize custom code remediation and clean core strategies, use of CDS views and AMDPs, SAP UI5 and Fiori development, and migration of ABAP artifacts to meet ABAP NW 7.5 syntax and coding standards.
Integration architecture and interfaces are implemented using SAP integration primitives and established middleware approaches documented in the role, including OData and Gateway services, ALE Idocs, proxies, standard web services, and conversion utilities. Side‑by‑side extension patterns on SAP Business Technology Platform are part of the architecture, leveraging CAP, RESTful ABAP patterns, Cloud Foundry deployment models and developer toolchains such as SAP BAS, GitHub and Bitbucket for source control and CI workflows.
Governance is organized around code quality, testing and compliance controls, with mandatory ATC variants, SPAU and SPDD handling for transport and upgrade tasks, unit testing and regression testing cycles, and a documented requirement to work with compliance, security and legal teams for AI governance. AI enablement is explicitly included in the technical roadmap as pilots, proofs of concept and scoped migrations to S/4 HANA, with responsibilities to partner with business stakeholders to identify use cases and to uphold data privacy and security standards.
Operational delivery responsibilities span architecture, functional leads and development teams for end to end lifecycle of S/4 HANA and BTP objects, including design, development, conversions, forms, enhancements, and workflow orchestration. The narrative reflects an SAP S/4 HANA centric ERP Financial implementation with integrated technical and governance controls, explicit custom code transformation requirements, and platform extension patterns for ongoing innovation.

| Workday | Legacy | Workday Absence Management | Absence and Leave Management | HCM | n/a | 2015 | 2015 |
In 2015, Medtronic deployed Workday Absence Management to centralize leave and time-off administration across its U.S. and Puerto Rico workforce. Workday Absence Management, categorized as Absence and Leave Management, was configured to support benefits, retirement, time off and leave policies for more than 40,000 U.S. and Puerto Rico employees, aligning absence administration with broader benefits operations.
The implementation included configuration and ongoing management of the benefits and absence modules in Workday, with the Principal Benefits Analyst acting as the Benefits Operations subject-matter expert. Functional workstreams covered requirements definition, configuration, testing and troubleshooting, and the team managed global administration processing for benefits and absence, including annual open enrollment for the U.S., Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom.
Operational integrations and conversion work were a key focus, including transition of 15,000+ acquired Covidien employees into Workday, which required harmonizing and restructuring benefit and time-off plans, reconfiguration of Workday, communications and enrollments. For Puerto Rico, benefits administration, time off and leave of absences were converted into Workday from PeopleSoft and HR Sense for 3,500+ employees, and a new 401k and retirement vendor was implemented and onboarded into the Workday benefits workflow.
Governance and compliance processes were instituted to manage state and local sick leave law requirements, and to standardize benefits and leave workflows within the HR Shared Services model. Outcomes explicitly documented include successful annual employee benefits open enrollment cycles and the large-scale employee transitions into Workday, demonstrating the system was used as the operational core for absence and leave administration.

| Platform.AI | Legacy | Platform.AI Spinal Implant Detection & Surveillance | Medical Imaging | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2019 | 2019 |
In 2021, Medtronic deployed Platform.AI Spinal Implant Detection & Surveillance as a Medical Imaging capability in North America to automate identification of spinal implants from X ray images for clinical imaging and medical device support. The implementation targeted clinical imaging operations and device support teams, positioning Platform.AI Spinal Implant Detection & Surveillance as an image analytics layer within diagnostic workflows.
The deployment combined an implant identification module with surveillance and case review workflows, using image preprocessing, machine learning classification, and structured reporting to flag implant types and confidence levels. Configuration focused on automated detection pipelines and reviewer escalation queues to reduce manual identification effort while preserving clinician review in the loop.
Integrations were implemented into existing clinical imaging workflows and medical device support processes, enabling handoff of flagged cases to clinical teams and device support specialists across North America. Operational scope included imaging departments and device support functions, with deployment patterns consistent with phased rollouts across regional clinical sites.
Governance emphasized clinical validation and ongoing monitoring of detection performance, with operational controls for case adjudication and audit logging. The project delivered a stated reduction in manual identification effort and an estimated recurring enterprise value of $2M, as reported by the Platform.AI project description.
