Moderna Therapeutics Digital Transformation Initiatives

About the Customer

Moderna Therapeutics was founded in 2010 with the goal of delivering on the promise of messenger RNA (mRNA) science to create novel medicines for unmet patient needs. The company’s focus areas include infectious diseases, cancer/immuno-oncology, cardiometabolic diseases, and rare liver and pulmonary diseases. Including both internal and partnered programs, there are 16 mRNA drugs in Moderna’s development pipeline: nine prophylactic vaccines, two therapeutic vaccines, and five therapeutics. Seven of these drugs, including an immuno-oncology therapeutic, are already in clinical, or human, study.

Scope and Challenges

To keep up with its growing pipeline of mRNA medicines and maintain flexibility, Moderna needed to become a digital business.

In 2016, as part of supporting a new 200,00 square foot manufacturing facility buildout, Moderna partnered with SAP and Answerthink (SAP Partner) to build an integrated finance & manufacturing system.

Outcome and Implications

The implementation leaded by Answerthink was finished in two phases.

Phase 1: By the end of 2016, a full finance and procurement system based on S/4HANA was implemented. Moderna was among the first companies to use Amazon Web Services (AWS) to host their SAP environment and to support a regulated GMP manufacturing system in production. In addition to implementing S/4HANA, Moderna implemented SAP SuccessFactors Learning Management System (LMS) and also Concur, SAP BusinessObjects, and SAP Fiori in a fully integrated mode to manage it’s end-to-end purchase-to-pay process for approximately 600 users.

Phase2: In 2017 they migrated to the 1610 version of S/4HANA and have implemented the Manufacturing and Supply chain modules. For this project, Moderna worked with Answerthink, an SAP partner with extensive experience and expertise in the life science industry. Answerthink helped Moderna with planning, blueprinting and implementation. In 2016 Answerthink implemented the finance and procurement pieces, and continued in 2017 with the manufacturing and the supply chain pieces.

With SAP S/4HANA and other SAP solutions, Moderna can work efficiently and effectively to improve medical treatment.

Benefits from SAP S/4HANA and other SAP Solutions:
