In 2021, NCH Healthcare System began implementation of EPIC EHR, an Electronic Health Record platform, with final cutover completed on June 4, 2022 when NCH officially switched from Cerner to Epic. The deployment consolidated more than 1 million patient records and extended across NCH hospitals, outpatient and diagnostic centers, and NCH Physician Group practices, establishing a single Electronic Health Record backbone for clinical operations across the system.
EPIC EHR was configured to support core clinical documentation and longitudinal patient records across inpatient and outpatient settings, and to enable the MyChart patient portal for remote access. The configuration emphasized patient-facing access and care continuity, enabling clinicians to view prior virtual visits and emergency encounters from outside facilities, and to receive notifications when patients experience care events away from the Naples area.
Operational integration focused on record ingestion and patient identity consolidation across hospital, clinic and physician practice domains, and on interoperability pathways that allow MyChart cross-system visibility with other Epic-connected providers. The cutover included migration of patient records into EPIC EHR and activation of notification workflows so physicians receive alerts when their patients have changes to medical records while outside the local region. More than 4,300 NCH employees completed training on the new system ahead of go live.
Governance and rollout included centralized IT support and an organizational training program to sustain adoption, with NCH IT teams providing ongoing assistance to staff for system questions and issue remediation. Patient outreach was executed through system-wide notifications that included instructions for downloading and setting up MyChart access to NCH records.
Reported outcomes stated that EPIC EHR and MyChart provided improved access to records and results for patients and clinicians, greater remote accessibility for on-call physicians, and an intended improvement in patient experience through unified record access and notification workflows.
