In 2024, Novartis deployed SAP S/4 HANA as an ERP Financial implementation to centralize Technical R&D and clinical supply chain planning across global planning locations and six Pilot Plants in Europe, the US and Asia. The program used a multi-site pilot-first rollout structure with on-site change leadership based in Basel, Switzerland and a dedicated Organizational Change Management Lead in place from Jul 2024 to present.
The SAP S/4 HANA configuration emphasized ERP Financial capabilities and procurement-to-pay integration for Development functions, aligning supplier master and procurement processes with clinical supply planning. Implementation workstreams included configuring transactional finance and procurement workflows to feed the Demand Control Tower, while establishing a global super user and change agent community to operationalize new master data and transactional processes.
Implementation activities ran in parallel with an M&A procurement integration program where the team led the procurement integration work-stream for the Chinook acquisition, integrating over 800 vendors across Development functions including Clinical Operations, Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, Pharmacovigilance, and IT. SAP S/4 HANA served as the central ERP Financial anchor for vendor master data harmonization and procurement orchestration across those departments.
Governance was structured with the Organizational Change Management Lead acting as Change and Engagement Partner to departmental leadership teams, setting up global change agents, a super user community, and coordinating training and adoption across pilot sites. Rollout governance focused on departmental engagement, standardized procurement and planning processes, and a cross-functional change network to manage cutover and adoption across Technical R&D and clinical supply chain sites.
Prior clinical supply chain initiatives led by the same organization provided implementation experience and measurable outcomes, including a supply parameter optimization program that delivered a stated cost saving of $7.5 million and a reduction of 3,200 tons of CO2, informing the change management design for SAP S/4 HANA adoption.
