In 2021, OceanaGold Australia brought drone surveying in-house using the DroneDeploy Platform to support mine restoration and rehabilitation monitoring, leveraging Computer Vision capabilities for environmental mapping. The implementation targeted an environmental mine-restoration use case in New Zealand and demonstrated rapid, large-area mapping throughput, capturing approximately 550 hectares in a single day with the DroneDeploy Platform.
The deployment emphasized automated flight planning, high-resolution aerial capture, and photogrammetry workflows for orthomosaic generation and change detection, consistent with Computer Vision application patterns for site monitoring. Configuration focused on repeatable mission templates and automated image stitching to produce georeferenced orthomosaics and volumetric and vegetation-change artefacts to support rehabilitation assessment and progress tracking.
Operationally the program moved surveying activities from infrequent contracted surveys to an internalized, repeatable process used by rehabilitation and environmental teams at the New Zealand site, centralizing mapping workflows and data handoffs for field and engineering functions. The implementation produced an estimated annual savings of around AUD 33,000, and governance adjustments included establishing routine capture schedules and standardized output formats to support ongoing environmental monitoring with the DroneDeploy Platform.
