In 2019 Orica began a multi-year implementation of SAP S/4 HANA, an ERP Financial system, under its 4S program Simple, Standard, Single SAP which was designed to consolidate finance and related end-to-end processes. The program explicitly aimed to centralize Orica’s financial core on SAP S/4 HANA while standardizing processes across the group and simplifying the application footprint.
The implementation emphasized financial modules and configurations aligned to ERP Financial requirements, including core financial management, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial close orchestration. SAP S/4 HANA was configured to support standardized master data and end-to-end process orchestration across eight defined business process flows, consistent with a program focused on simplification and single instance control.
The rollout consolidated Orica’s entire business on an S/4 HANA core and was supported by SAP cloud add-ons, with data migration and conversion work performed from the existing SAP ERP ECC 6.0 platform. Cognizant acted as the system integrator supporting deployment tasks, integration sequencing, and cutover activities during phased releases of the program.
Governance was organized around the 4S program framework, with staged rollout and control over the final cutover activities, the largest and final phase implemented in July 2020. Orica reported COVID-19 related challenges that delayed the close in the new system and the publication of full year results, noted a 31 percent decline in profit for the year, and stated an expectation that the completed SAP S/4 HANA rollout would contribute a $15 million boost to EBIT in the 2021 financial year while confirming key strategic milestones had been achieved.

In 2019, Orica implemented SAP Fieldglass as part of its 4S Transformation program to operationalize Contingent Labor Management across the organization. SAP Fieldglass was positioned to provide a governed platform for contingent workforce requisitioning and supplier engagement, aligning contingent labor processes with Orica business streams such as Market Intelligence, Order to Cash and Issue to Resolution.
Configuration work focused on Contingent Labor Management capabilities typical of the category, including contingent workforce requisitioning, supplier management and onboarding, time and attendance capture, and engagement lifecycle workflows. SAP Fieldglass was used to standardize contingent workforce processes and to provide integrated compliance and approval flows tied into Orica procurement and HR touchpoints.
The implementation was architected with S/4 HANA as the digital core, and SAP Fieldglass was integrated into the broader SAP cloud suite, explicitly including SAP Hybris, S/4 HANA, Successfactors, Ariba and IBP. Integration design and architecture work was executed on the Azure Cloud Platform, with a focus on end to end connectivity between SAP Hybris and S/4 HANA and on linking Fieldglass supplier and time data into the S/4 HANA led financial and procurement processes.
Governance for the SAP Fieldglass rollout was driven through design workshops with global process owners and close engagement with PMO, Business Readiness, Integration, Data Migration, Market Intelligence and Supply Chain streams. Stakeholder coordination spanned teams in Singapore and Melbourne, with the implementation led through integrated design and process alignment activities to embed contingent labor management into Orica procurement and HR workflows.

In 2021, Orica deployed Zebra Oil And Gas Production as a Field Service Management solution across its global production sites, with the project led from Australia. The implementation targeted traceability and inventory management to provide real time inventory visibility and transaction-level tracking across manufacturing sites.
The deployment used intrinsically safe Zebra TC75Xex-NI mobile touch computers, and incorporated BARTEC Top Holding integration alongside SOTI MobiControl for device lifecycle and security management. Zebra Oil And Gas Production was configured to support track and trace workflows, handheld scanning and inventory reconciliation capabilities consistent with Field Service Management functional workflows.
The solution integrated directly with Orica’s SAP systems as part of a cloud SAP track and trace rollout, enabling bi directional data flow between handheld devices and enterprise master data and transactional systems. The integration landscape explicitly included device management through SOTI MobiControl and partner enabled BARTEC interfaces to link device data with SAP transaction records.
Governance and rollout were coordinated from Australia and executed across Orica’s manufacturing footprint, aligning operational teams on standardized scanning and inventory processes. The implementation improved traceability and inventory accuracy across manufacturing sites and delivered real time inventory visibility as stated in the project source.
