3M | Manufacturing | 61500 | $24.6B | United States | Infor | Infor Infinium ERP PL | AP Automation | 2009 |
In 2009, 3M purchased additional seats of Infor Infinium ERP PL to extend its AS/400-based enterprise finance and ERP landscape, expanding use of the Infor Infinium ERP PL platform within its finance organization. 3M used Infor Infinium ERP PL to broaden coverage for core financials and accounts-payable processing, aligning the application to enterprise finance and AP Automation needs across the company.
The deployment emphasized finance and accounts-payable functional modules, including core general ledger interfacing, vendor invoice processing, invoice capture and routing, and AP workflow automation consistent with AP Automation capabilities. Configuration work focused on transactional controls and posting rules to align Infinium financials with 3M corporate accounting processes, while preserving the AS/400-based operational architecture of the Infor Infinium ERP PL environment.
Cognizant was engaged for maintenance starting in 2010, providing ongoing application support and sustainment for the Infor Infinium ERP PL estate. Public coverage of the engagement documents a licensing and support dispute related to Infinium entitlements, which shaped governance and support negotiations for the finance and accounts-payable footprint within 3M.

The implementation delivered specific functional modules and data migration constructs for Materials Management, Production Planning, Manufacturing and Inventory Management, Plant Maintenance, Procure to Pay, Customer Master and Vendor Master. Data migration design included ETL programs and load artifacts for MM master records such as MARA and MARC plant extensions, valuation tables such as MBEW, sales data MVKE, bill of materials and master recipe structures for MM-PP, production versions and resource master definitions, inventory movements and PM objects including equipment, maintenance plans, task lists and work centers.
Cognizant acted as the system integrator supporting the APAC program delivery from Sydney, coordinating with 3M APAC IT, business SMEs and development teams to deliver releases across Australia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Benelux. The technical stack and migration tooling explicitly included SAP Data Services and BODS for ETL, SAP Information Steward for data profiling and data quality validations, and LSMW for loading prepared flat files into SAP ERP ECC 6.0.
Governance for the rollout centered on detailed target object specifications, high level and low level design signoffs with functional SMEs, mapping documents, data cleansing, standardization and deduplication to achieve a single source of truth, and reconciliations combining business and technical reports. Data quality controls and validation rules were enforced during execution, and the program reported achieving a data quality percentage of 95 percent in less than six months.
