SAP SAP ERP ECC 6.0 SAP S/4 HANA ERP Financial ERP n/a 2005 2006
In 2005, Peabody Energy implemented SAP S/4 HANA to consolidate and modernize its core ERP Financial environment. The deployment was scoped to enterprise finance and corporate functions at the U.S.-based coal producer, migrating transactional finance workloads from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 to a unified SAP S/4 HANA platform. The implementation focused on standard ERP Financial capabilities, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets and period-end financial close orchestration, with configuration to support master data governance and embedded financial reporting. SAP S/4 HANA was provisioned to enable streamlined financial workflows and to host central financial master data, while leveraging in-platform automation for transaction processing and close activities. Integrations were articulated with the broader analytics and data stack that Peabody maintains, including SAP BW on HANA, SAP Datasphere and SAP Data Services for data consolidation and ETL, and SAP Analytics Cloud for reporting and planning. The technical footprint also aligned with Microsoft and Azure tools cited by Peabody’s analytics leadership, such as Power BI, Azure Data Factory and Azure Data Lake, enabling downstream reporting, BI consumption and automated data pipelines across finance and operations. Governance and operational change emphasized enterprise architecture and automation pipeline governance to standardize analytics and process automation practices across finance, operations and corporate functions. The program directed global delivery teams to embed analytics into decision-making and to improve operational efficiency, while centralizing financial process controls and reporting on the SAP S/4 HANA ERP Financial platform.

Empyrean Legacy Empyrean Benefits Benefits Administration HCM n/a 2019 2019
In 2019, Peabody Energy implemented Empyrean Benefits, deploying an automated Benefits Administration solution to centralize and modernize benefits workflows for employees and retirees. The deployment targeted roughly 10,000 lives and addressed a previously insourced, paper based open enrollment and benefits support model that had to handle complex retirement rules and differentiated union and non union plan options. The implementation emphasized a rules and exceptions engine that codified decades of plan nuance, many of which were grandfathered retiree and union plans. Empyrean Benefits was configured to automate health and wellness plan administration, digital open enrollment, retiree communications for life insurance and medical plan changes, and the operational coordination required to manage multiple plan options across employee populations. Operational integrations focused on carrier and vendor orchestration rather than on a specific HRIS, the Empyrean team coordinating with 18 carriers and vendors and supplementing the deployment with a dedicated Empyrean call center for personalized support. The project incorporated institutional knowledge from Peabody’s benefits team to capture plan details and to create online experiences that served both active employees and retirees across the United States. Governance and process changes centered on formalizing plan documentation, exception handling workflows, and centralized benefits rules to reduce reliance on individual team members for day to day administration. After go live Peabody reported greater transparency and consistency in plan rules, improved data accuracy, more efficient exception management, and a compressed open enrollment timeline that moved from months to weeks, and the Empyrean team continues to partner with Peabody to evaluate additional voluntary benefits and vendor additions.

SAP Legacy SAP Analytics Cloud Analytics and BI Analytics and BI n/a 2020 2020
In 2020, Peabody Energy implemented SAP Analytics Cloud as its enterprise Analytics and BI platform. The initial deployment focused on consolidating reporting and analytics capabilities to support finance, operations, and corporate functions, aligning with a documented enterprise analytics and automation strategy led by senior analytics leadership. SAP Analytics Cloud was configured to deliver centralized dashboards, ad hoc reporting, planning workflows, and predictive analytics capabilities. The implementation integrated with on-premise and cloud SAP systems explicitly referenced in the environment, including SAP BW on HANA, SAP Datasphere, SAP BusinessObjects, SAP Data Services, SAP ERP and SAP S/4HANA, creating a unified semantic layer and source feeds for governed analytics consumption. The deployment architecture emphasized an enterprise analytics architecture and governance framework, including automation pipeline governance and standardized data ingestion and model lifecycle practices. Operational coverage was managed by global delivery teams responsible for configuration, security roles, content promotion, and environment segregation across development, test and production landscapes. Governance and process restructuring were driven by senior managers who prioritized initiatives by ROI, risk, and strategic value, established platform governance, and embedded analytics into strategic planning. The SAP Analytics Cloud implementation supported modernization of reporting, streamlined workflows, and integration of analytics into decision making to improve operational efficiency and deliver measurable ROI.
