Reckitt established knowledge transfer workflows and created localization documentation for handoff, while engaging markets through kick-off workshops and ongoing alignment with country points of contact. Governance for the rollout included workstream sponsors, a Design Authority, and a RACI driven stakeholder model to manage decisions and escalations. In 2021, Reckitt Benckiser upgraded and migrated Thermo Scientific SampleManager LIMS to Azure using an IaaS deployment to support Laboratory Management for its Nutrition quality control operations. The effort was scoped to preserve existing business workflows across global QC labs, retain point to point integrations where possible, and secure highly sensitive laboratory data while sustaining the systems that support more than 16 million product batches delivered annually.
The implementation encompassed a platform upgrade of Thermo Scientific SampleManager LIMS and the introduction of complementary modules including Thermo Scientific SampleManager IDI software for SAP connectivity and Thermo Scientific Integration Manager software for instrument interfacing. The team moved the LIMS database from Oracle to Microsoft SQL Server, addressing compatibility issues by rewriting database functions for SQL Server, adding new indexes to optimize performance for large active and archive tables, and cleansing NULL-driven duplicates prior to data load.
Integrations were executed as a hybrid cloud topology combining Azure IaaS hosting, on-premises instrument connectivity, and middleware. Reckitt exposed a Web API on the SampleManager application server to enable MuleSoft orchestration, MuleSoft was configured to accept PI PO triggers for SAP requests and to proxy calls between SAP S/4HANA and Optiva PLM and the SampleManager LIMS API, and MuleSoft replaced earlier CSV based SFTP exchanges for third party labs. Instrument level connectivity was handled via Integration Manager software, providing bi directional data translation and secure HTTP API endpoints, while thick client access used Azure Windows Virtual Desktop and secure network routing via a Supernet connection and Palo Alto Network firewall rules for specific application and printing ports.
Governance and application modernization focused on reducing custom code and standardizing configurations, migrating bespoke functions to modern dot net implementations to ease future upgrades. The project team worked directly with Thermo Fisher and Microsoft to map integrations, define firewall allowances by site and subnet, and iterate on virtual desktop regioning for user performance. Reckitt selected IaaS as a deliberate low risk first cloud step to mirror on premises behavior while buying time to rationalize two decades of customizations.
The integrated solution, with Thermo Scientific SampleManager LIMS and SampleManager IDI software linking laboratory data to SAP, provides the backbone for a compliant and efficient lab environment at Reckitt. The cloud LIMS implementation serves as a model for further cloud migration work, and the team is actively testing a move toward PaaS to reduce run costs once dependence on custom code has been minimized.
