In 2019 Shanghai Municipal People's Government contracted MXC Foundation to deploy MXC Moonchain, a Blockchain Platform, in Yangpu District to capture and enable analysis of municipal sensor data. The public announcement in 2019 framed the engagement as a district-level smart city infrastructure initiative focused on air quality, traffic flow, and occupancy sensing, with the objective of expanding urban data capture for municipal services in China.
The implementation combined the MXProtocol LPWAN stack with MXC Moonchain Blockchain Platform components to support device onboarding, secure data provenance, and a tokenized on-chain data-market functionality inferred from press coverage. Functional capabilities implemented included LPWAN gateway provisioning and edge sensor ingestion, device identity and attestation controls, smart contract based data listing and exchange, and an on-chain ledger for immutable telemetry records, enabling downstream analytics workflows.
Architecturally the deployment placed LPWAN gateways at the network edge to aggregate sensor streams and relay signed data payloads into a cluster of blockchain nodes running MXC Moonchain, with indexed transaction feeds exposed for analytics. Integrations were limited to municipal sensor networks and district operational systems as part of the data capture and analytics scope, with operational coverage explicitly centered on Yangpu District municipal services.
Governance and rollout were coordinated between Yangpu District government teams and MXC Foundation, with public sector oversight of data access and marketplace participation noted in the announcement. The project aimed to create on-chain traceability for urban telemetry and to increase the volume and usability of municipal sensor data for service planning, while leaving specific operational outcomes to subsequent evaluation.
