In 2012, Steel Partners implemented Microsoft Dynamics GP Accounts Payable as part of an AP Automation initiative. The deployment targeted the corporate Controller’s Office and a newly built Accounts Payable department, providing centralized AP processing across an international holding company with subsidiaries in manufacturing, oil well servicing, niche banking and other sectors.
The Microsoft Dynamics GP Accounts Payable implementation configured core accounts payable processing, invoice capture and validation, approval workflows, vendor master consolidation and enhanced reporting capabilities. The project consolidated multiple AP systems into a single platform to establish consistent approval controls, streamline cash-flow management and improve payables accuracy and reporting across subsidiaries.
The program transitioned finance transactional processing from noncompliant QuickBooks to the cloud version of Great Plains to standardize posting and control frameworks. Operational coverage included direct management of the new Controller’s Department, three direct reports and dotted-line oversight of a shared services Accounts Payable function, supporting the holding company and its operating subsidiaries.
Governance and process changes accompanied the technical rollout, with finance leadership chairing the Disclosure Committee and serving on the Governance, Compliance and Risk Committee while directing implementation of new GAAP requirements. The Microsoft Dynamics GP Accounts Payable deployment ran alongside an implementation of WebFilings for SEC reporting, and the WebFilings rollout was credited with avoiding outside legal fees, while the AP consolidation strengthened approval workflows and reporting capability.
