In 2016 Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank began deploying Amazon EC2 as part of an Application Hosting and Computing Services engagement for its Jersey City, NJ operations, with the primary implementation window running from July 2016 to July 2017. The effort centered on deploying multiple customer facing and backend applications on AWS with an explicit emphasis on high availability, fault tolerance and auto scaling of instances.
The implementation used Amazon EC2 instances fronted by Elastic Load Balancers and Auto Scaling groups within purpose built VPCs. Network architecture work included VPC, public and private subnets, NAT gateways, internet gateways and security groups, and DNS and identity configuration using Route53 and IAM. Infrastructure was provisioned using reusable Terraform modules to create EC2, ELB, Auto Scaling groups, VPC, subnets, NAT, Internet Gateways, S3 buckets, security groups and SSH key management, and the Terraform build and deployment automation was orchestrated through Jenkins.
Configuration management and runtime provisioning were delivered with Chef and Puppet across multiple RHEL environments, using a Chef workstation to manage agents and deploy reusable Chef cookbooks and recipes to install and configure platform components such as Git, Jenkins, Maven, Java, .Net, Python, SQL clients and Nagios. Cookbooks were developed to provision application servers including WebLogic, Tomcat and WebSphere and were converted to Puppet manifests as requirements dictated, with Puppet modules integrated into Jenkins for continuous integration and continuous delivery of microservices. Containerization and delivery pipelines were implemented using Docker, with a Continuous Delivery pipeline built on Docker, Jenkins, GitHub and AWS AMIs, and branch level Docker image creation tied to Jenkins for CI.
Operational integrations included S3 for object storage, Route53 for DNS, IAM for access controls, Nagios for monitoring of network and protocol failures, and on premise SQL Server integration and tuning for database performance. Automation was expanded with Python, Shell and XML scripts to reduce configuration time, and testing and automation frameworks were planned and implemented using QTP and Selenium for Java based banking and investments applications. The program concentrated on standardizing provisioning, CI and CD workflows, and embedding infrastructure as code practices to support application development, deployment and operations for the bank.
