In 2015 Target Australia implemented a Coles-based ERP as an ERP Financial system to reduce manual order processing and costs. The initiative addressed needs across an organisation operating more than 300 stores in Australia, with an explicit objective to improve supplier transparency and embrace cloud-forward technology.
The Coles-based ERP deployment concentrated on enterprise order management and financial processing capabilities common to ERP Financial solutions, including automated purchase order flows and supplier invoicing orchestration. An EDI gateway was introduced to automate document exchange and standardise order processing, reducing manual touch points while preserving core accounting and ledger functions within the Coles-based ERP.
Integration work centered on connecting the EDI gateway provided by MessageXchange to the Coles-based ERP, enabling electronic supplier connectivity and automated order transmission into central retail systems. Operational coverage included store replenishment and procurement workflows, supplier onboarding for EDI trading partners, and downstream feeds into financial posting and supplier settlement processes.
Governance focused on supplier integration standards and process automation to shift manual order handling to electronic procedures, with rollout designed to accommodate varied supplier capabilities. Outcomes explicitly reported include reduced manual order processing and lower costs, paired with improved transparency for suppliers and finance teams.

In 2020, Target Australia implemented SAP SuccessFactors Compensation as part of a March 2020 SuccessFactors Payroll and HCM rollout covering all 13,500 team members, positioning the new application within the Compensation Management category. The deployment consolidated HR and payroll capabilities onto an intuitive, mobile-enabled SAP SuccessFactors platform to provide candidates and team members with a unified approach for recruitment, onboarding, personal profiling, payroll and compensation.
The SAP SuccessFactors Compensation implementation included compensation management configuration and standard compensation planning workflows, together with payroll and HCM module configuration and employee profile consolidation. Functional workstreams addressed recruitment and onboarding process alignment, payroll processing continuity and mobile access for payroll and compensation self-service, reflecting Compensation Management best practices for salary administration and variable pay orchestration.
Integration work focused on embedding SAP SuccessFactors Compensation into the broader SuccessFactors suite, aligning payroll interfaces, recruitment and onboarding processes and HR master data flows to a single platform. Operational coverage was national, supporting retail store staff and 850 national store support office personnel, and included configuration to support workforce changes driven by store network reductions and office realignments.
Governance and rollout were executed through a 15 month program led by a 20 person project team, progressing from planning, RFQ and selection to workshops, integration and business embedding, with the implementation delivered within the agreed timeline and within budget. The SuccessFactors program ran alongside major HR initiatives including a coordinated return to office for 600 staff and headcount governance activities during store conversions and office realignment, requiring integrated communications, leadership engagement and HR process redesign.
