In 2014, TransAlta implemented SAP ERP ECC 6.0 as its ERP Financial backbone, replacing SAP R/3 and consolidating core finance, procurement and inventory accounting functions. The SAP ERP ECC 6.0 deployment was positioned to unify Record to Report, Procure to Pay and Order to Cash workflows across TransAlta Canada operations, aligning finance and operational processes for a mid sized utility.
The implementation included core financial modules FI CO and extended logistics capabilities with MM and WM, along with Plant Maintenance PM and SD related transaction flows. Functional coverage explicitly encompassed Contract management, Sales Order processing, Delivery and Post Goods Issue, Physical Inventory updates, ATP checks, Pricing, and inventory serial number and quantity management, reflecting integrated ERP Financial and supply chain functional footprints.
Architecture was centered on a consolidated ECC instance with module-level integration between finance, procurement and plant maintenance processes, and with testing and automation activities supported by JIRA and Automation Worksoft as part of the application support tooling. Master data domains implemented and validated included material, customer, CMIR and pricing conditions, together with inventory status and serial number data to support transaction accuracy and financial reconciliation.
Governance emphasized rigorous test planning and UAT discipline, with documented test strategy, test scope, test matrix, test cases and scheduled UAT training for business users. Test activities included impact analysis, business approvals, and ongoing UAT and project level test support, plus master data creation and cleansing workflows to prepare pre production and post production environments.

In 2014, TransAlta implemented SAP SuccessFactors Variable Pay as part of its Compensation Management initiative. The engagement included consulting support from October 2012 through December 2014 in Calgary, AB, working directly with SuccessFactors module leads and TransAlta HR team members.
The implementation covered configuration and alignment activities across multiple SuccessFactors modules, including Learning Management System LMS, On boarding, JAM, Goals, Employee Profile, 360 Feedback, Performance Management, Development, Succession Management, Recruitment Management, and Variable Pay. Workstreams included documenting as-is and to-be business processes, defining data requirements, and configuring variable pay structures and components within SAP SuccessFactors Variable Pay to align compensation workflows with HR and talent management processes.
Integration and system testing were executed across the SuccessFactors modules addressed by the business requirements, with development of test plans and test cases, troubleshooting during testing, and support for data analysis and data conversion activities. Operational coverage focused on HR and talent management functions, with collaboration between module leads to surface and resolve gaps between current and future states and to ensure end-to-end compensation and performance workflows functioned across the suite.
Governance and sustainment tasks included ongoing knowledge transfer to HR module leads, creation of step by step training documentation and quick reference guides, participation in change management meetings, maintenance of project artifacts and status reporting, and facilitation of the transition to sustainment. The consulting role also owned the sustainment strategy and the implementation of the sustainment plan post Go Live for SAP SuccessFactors Variable Pay.
