Union Pacific implemented SAP ERP ECC 6.0 - Financial Accounting (FI) in 2014 as part of an ERP Financial deployment supporting finance and adjacent operational functions across the railroad network. The engagement sat on an ECC6.0 technical stack with GRC 10.0, XI/PI for middleware, and QC 10.5 for testing, reflecting a security and compliance focused installation aligned to transportation operations across 23 states.
The implementation concentrated on Financial Accounting while provisioning role and authorization coverage for CO, HR, MM, SD, and PP modules. Role engineering used Profile Generator PFCG to create single roles, composite roles, derived roles and task based versus position based role constructs. Custom authorization objects were defined via SU21 and analysis authorizations were managed with RSECADMIN, while program and table protection used authorization groups defined through SE54.
Centralized user lifecycle and distribution was configured using Central User Administration CUA, with transport of roles and authorization content moved from development to quality for testing then into production. The landscape integrated GRC 10.0 features for access risk analysis, and XI/PI was present as the integration layer for cross application interfaces. Generic account hardening was applied, including creation and locking of user master data for high risk accounts and avoidance of broad profiles such as SAP_ALL and SAP_NEW.
Governance workstreams were explicitly tied to SOX control requirements and segregation of duties management, using ARA in GRC 10.0 to perform user and role risk analysis, remediation and mitigation. Fire Fighter IDs were provisioned and Fire Fighter logs were extracted and reviewed within ARA GRC 10.0. Comprehensive procedural documentation and training manuals were produced to operationalize role administration and to serve as reference materials for system administrators and auditors.
Operational controls implemented during the engagement included tracing and troubleshooting authorization failures with ST01, SU53, SM19, and SM20 and maintenance of transport and change control for role artifacts. The project emphasized secure role design, centralized user administration, and governance processes to support ongoing authorization management in the SAP ERP ECC 6.0 - Financial Accounting (FI) environment.

| In-House Applications | Legacy | In-House ATS | Applicant Tracking System | HCM | n/a | 2011 | 2011 |
In 2011, Union Pacific implemented an In-House ATS as its Applicant Tracking System, deploying the application on the public careers area of its website. The In-House ATS functions as the primary intake and candidate management surface for the company’s recruiting organization and is the front-end experience candidates use to apply for roles.
The implementation of the In-House ATS emphasizes standard Applicant Tracking System capabilities, including job requisition publishing, online application capture, resume parsing and candidate status workflows. Configuration centers on recruiter and hiring manager workflows, role-based access controls, requisition lifecycle tracking and automated applicant communications to support hiring processes.
As an in-house application embedded in Union Pacific’s website, the system centralizes sourcing and application collection for talent acquisition and HR recruiting functions. Governance and operational ownership reside with talent acquisition teams who manage requisition templates, approval steps and hiring stage definitions, while recruiters and hiring managers use the system for screening and interview coordination.

| Wolters Kluwer | Legacy | Wolters Kluwer Passport | Legal Practice Management | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2003 | 2003 |
In 2003 Union Pacific implemented Wolters Kluwer Passport as a Legal Practice Management application to centralize electronic billing and automate invoice workflow for its corporate legal department. The deployment was oriented toward eliminating paper-based invoicing between in-house counsel and outside law firms, with initial implementations targeted for completion by early spring 2003.
Wolters Kluwer Passport was configured to deliver core Legal Practice Management capabilities including electronic invoice submission, automated validation against corporate billing rules, online review, adjustment and approval workflows, and standardized invoice translation. The implementation referenced web-based services used to translate varied law firm billing formats into a single corporate format, and to perform invoice validation tests and business-rule checks such as photocopy charge compliance.
The solution integrated directly with outside law firms for secure invoice exchange and was designed to upload approved invoices into downstream data management and financial applications. Operational scope centered on Union Pacifics in-house legal managers and outside counsel relationships, using the e-billing and workflow tooling to capture invoice data, run monthly expenditure reports, and monitor law firm activity and performance.
Governance changes emphasized workflow-driven approval and expense oversight within the legal function, replacing paper routing with online review and automated rule enforcement. Union Pacific expected the deployment of these Legal Practice Management capabilities to overhaul existing invoice processes while avoiding investment in bespoke infrastructure.
