In 2020, ViacomCBS implemented SAP S/4 HANA for ERP Financial. The initiative established an integrated finance backbone to support core accounting, FP&A planning, and workforce analytics across the company’s media and entertainment operations.
The SAP S/4 HANA deployment focused on core ERP financial capabilities and extended analytics, with SAP Analytics Cloud used as the primary planning and reporting layer. SAP S/4 HANA was configured to handle transactional financial processes while SAP Analytics Cloud supported planning data models, SAC planning workflows, and both live and import data scenarios for FP&A and HCM analytics.
Integrations were explicitly configured between SAP S/4 HANA and SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP BW, SAP BPC, SAP SuccessFactors, and DataServices to enable end-to-end financial and workforce reporting. These connections were designed to support centralized data reporting and to federate transactional and master data for finance, HR, and corporate FP&A teams.
Governance was driven by an analytics architecture function responsible for creating architecture design documents, managing proofs of concept, and translating business requirements into outcome-based analytics solutions. In 2018, ViacomCBS implemented Oracle PeopleSoft Absence Management as a dedicated Absence and Leave Management capability to formalize leave tracking and integrate absence workflows with payroll operations. The deployment targeted Payroll Operations and HR/Benefits functions, embedding absence lifecycle tracking into broader pay calculation and compliance processes.
Oracle PeopleSoft Absence Management was configured to maintain a centralized Leave of Absence log, support employee overrides for leave entries, and manage absence entitlements and approvals. Configuration and operational responsibilities extended to Additional Pay and General Deductions setup, processing special payment runs such as bonus and equity compensation, and handling off-cycle checks and reversals to preserve payroll integrity when absence adjustments were required.
The implementation operated alongside PeopleSoft Payroll for North America and PeopleSoft Time and Labor, with explicit operational integrations to reconcile and upload biweekly time and attendance files, tuition reimbursement files, and Executive 401k compensation and deduction reconciliations. Payroll operations included transmission and release of direct deposit and positive pay files, processing court ordered wage garnishments and levies, W2 reissue handling, and testing of application tax release and maintenance packs, reflecting multi-state payroll coverage with emphasis on NY and CA.
Governance and process controls were formalized through role based responsibilities, with the Payroll Specialist reporting to the Senior Manager Payroll Operations and acting as the liaison between Payroll and HRIS/Benefits. Day to day governance emphasized audit of HR transaction input for accuracy and completeness, reconciliations, file uploads, and testing procedures to sustain compliance and operational controls within the Oracle PeopleSoft Absence Management environment.

The implementation emphasized configuration of project templates, workflow rules, and assignment mechanisms consistent with Business Process Management practices to improve repeatability of HR processes.
Operational scope concentrated on HR Operations, Talent Attraction, and the newly formed HR Services function, where the team transitioned interview scheduling and temp to perm functions into a centralized HR Services organization. Cross functional leadership led the transition of interview scheduling and temp to perm workstreams into HR Services, aligning operational ownership with the configured WorkFront workflows.
Governance work included establishing cross functional leadership discussions and partnering with HR Operations to develop a three year service expansion strategy, aligning project governance to service delivery objectives. The initiative was led by a cross function team including HR Operations and Talent Attraction leaders, creating a governance forum to oversee WorkFront configuration, workflow ownership, and future service scope decisions.
