| Ethereum Foundation | Legacy | Ethereum Platform | Blockchain Platform | Blockchain | n/a | 2020 | 2020 |
In 2020 VTB Bank implemented the Ethereum Platform as a Blockchain Platform to issue a digital bank guarantee in favor of MTS. The issuance was executed through the Russian Masterchain Blockchain network, which is built on the Ethereum network and was developed by the Central Bank of Russia with the Fintech Association and participating commercial banks.
The implementation centered on a digital guarantee issuance capability within the Ethereum Platform, including on‑chain registration of guarantees with a reinforced qualified signature and real‑time transaction processing. Functional workflows enabled the beneficiary to verify legitimacy and accept the digital document, and the platform removed the need for paper documentation while preserving a legally binding record as stated by the Fintech Association.
VTB operated as a participant node on the Masterchain Blockchain network, aligning the Ethereum Platform deployment with a permissioned distributed ledger architecture used by other Russian banks. The implementation relied on cryptographic protection mechanisms designed in the country and integrated issuing, notification, and verification flows so that MTS could receive acceptance notifications back to the bank.
Governance and process changes included instrumenting issuance workflows for automated on‑chain recording and beneficiary verification, shifting custody of guarantee records to the distributed ledger, and formalizing acceptance procedures tied to the reinforced qualified signature. The program positioned VTB as the first bank in Russia to issue a digital bank guarantee on Masterchain, while other participants such as Gazprom Neft, Alfa Bank, PSB, Raiffeisenbank and Ak Bars maintain their own nodes within the same network.
Explicit outcomes reported with this deployment were faster issuance cycles, increased ability for beneficiaries to verify legitimacy and trust, reduced paperwork and related environmental benefits, and a reduced surface for fraud through placement of guarantee data on a distributed ledger. The Ethereum Platform implementation operated within the national Masterchain environment and delivered legally binding, real‑time digital guarantee issuance for corporate banking operations.
