In 2021 Canadian Solar transitioned to a new modelling approach using Lacima Trader to undertake valuation of renewable assets across its portfolio of solar contracts in Australia, addressing material exposure to both volume and price risk. The project centered on deploying Lacima Trader within the ETRM,CTRM category to introduce market-behavior simulation capabilities that complement intrinsic valuation methods.
Canadian Solar implemented Lacima Trader>Sim with single factor modelling to simulate price volatility and bidding behaviour at high temporal resolution. The configuration models power prices to five minute intervals and captures extreme price movements from negative excursions to high spikes, enabling generation weighted energy and ancillary service curves with sub-hourly granularity projected up to 35 years ahead. The implementation leveraged an Excel plug-in for rapid deployment, limiting configuration complexity and training overhead.
Operationally the solution was applied to asset valuation workflows for Canadian Solar’s Australian contracts, and to produce ancillary service pricing curves used to underpin storage valuations and investment appraisal. Integrations were minimal by design, with the Excel plug-in serving as the primary user interface and data exchange mechanism, enabling finance and commercial teams to consume simulation outputs without heavy systems integration.
Governance and process changes focused on embedding extrinsic value assessment into existing valuation processes, so that teams could contrast intrinsic and simulated extrinsic value when negotiating transactions. Implementing Lacima Trader delivered more accurate asset valuations and deeper insights into intrinsic and extrinsic components of asset value, while producing high granularity ancillary service pricing curves to support storage and contract negotiations.

Sembcorp Industries | Professional Services | 5347 | $5.0B | Singapore | Lacima | Lacima Trader | ETRM,CTRM | 2022 | n/a |
In 2022, Sembcorp Industries implemented Lacima Trader under an ETRM,CTRM scope to establish rapid, production grade risk measurement and optimisation for a global portfolio of financial contracts and physical assets. The deployment targeted valuation and cashflow exposure coverage across power, gas, oil, interest rates and FX, supporting the companys new trading operations and accelerated go live requirements.
Phase one delivered Lacima Analytics modules for parametric, historical and covariance Monte Carlo VaR, which were specified and configured to Sembcorps requirements, integrated with existing data systems and put into live production within three months. The Lacima Analytics implementation was designed to support both Delta VaR and covariance Monte Carlo VaR calculations on the full trading portfolio, and included configuration for daily batch runs and operational reporting.
A second phase implemented limit and breach reporting, credit risk, PFE, and automation of day to day business processes including running daily VaR and risk reporting to management. Subsequent phases extend VaR reporting to Sembcorps global portfolio by interfacing with additional deal capture systems, and expand metrics to cover physical asset risk by modelling underlying assets and implementing EaR calculations. Concurrently Lacima Trader>Storage is being onboarded to enable optimisation of gas storage assets.
Operational coverage centers on trading operations and management reporting for a global portfolio including power, gas, oil, interest rates and FX, with deployment architecture integrating Lacima Analytics and Lacima Trader components into Sembcorps data systems. Governance changes included automation of daily risk runs and formalised limit and breach reporting workflows to deliver timely management insight and control.
With this implementation Sembcorp is able to calculate both Delta VaR and covariance Monte Carlo VaR on their full trading portfolio in less than one minute, enabling trading to commence on schedule with timely valuation and risk metrics. When the further phases are completed Sembcorp will be positioned to calculate market and credit risk across its whole portfolio of traded contracts and physical assets, and to perform detailed analysis on its gas storage contracts portfolio.
