In 2018 the Danish Ministry of Defence implemented IBM Power Systems as its Application Hosting and Computing Services platform to host SAP HANA. After running a public tender the ministry selected IBM Power Systems, citing long term stability and reliability, and noting best value for money and best performance per CPU compared with Intel x86 alternatives. The deployment used two IBM Power System E880 servers configured to run IBM AIX and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications, forming the compute backbone for the new SAP HANA environment. The ministry elected to upgrade to the latest POWER8 generation capacity on IBM Power Systems rather than migrate to Intel based x86 appliances, aligning processor architecture with SAP HANA performance profiles. Storage architecture was refreshed by replacing the existing SAN with an IBM DS8886 array equipped with High Performance Flash Enclosure Gen2 flash cards to meet SAP HANA production storage requirements. The implementation therefore integrated compute, operating system, and high performance flash storage layers to deliver a hosted SAP HANA production environment under the Application Hosting and Computing Services category. Komplex IT supported the implementation and configuration activities across the compute and storage stack following the procurement decision. Project documentation highlights the selection rationale and confirms the chosen IBM Power Systems and IBM DS8886 configuration met the stated storage and performance requirements for SAP HANA production systems.
