Manufacturing | 236 | $78M | United Kingdom | IFS | IFS Supply Chain Management | Supply Chain Management | 2023 |
In 2023 SMD selected IFS partner Platned to execute a major upgrade from IFS Apps 7.5 to IFS Supply Chain Management, a Supply Chain Management solution built on the IFS Cloud platform. The project was delivered on schedule in 12 months and within budget, with a seamless go live switchover for more than 250 users across two UK sites and continued use by SMD’s offshore division to manage global engineering and maintenance activities. The implementation retained an on premise instance to protect intellectual property and preserve critical integrations with advanced CAD engineering tools.
The new IFS Supply Chain Management deployment replicated core ERP capabilities previously in use, including Purchasing, Finance, Supply Chain, Parts, Engineering, Projects, Manufacturing, Servicing and time recording. Configuration work focused on preserving standard code and avoiding core customizations, while addressing stronger permissions and security controls in IFS Cloud. The implementation also embedded new AI enabled capabilities available in the evergreen IFS Cloud platform and planned exploration of the upcoming 24R2 AI enabled planning and scheduling engine.
Integrations were explicitly maintained with advanced CAD engineering toolchains to support engineering workflows, and the on premise infrastructure was kept to ensure IP security and performance. Platned provided the implementation services and has been retained under a managed service agreement to provide infrastructure monitoring, maintenance and a 24 7 help desk for end users. Delivery was largely remote with 95 percent of the project executed remotely and key milestones staffed on site including a one week period after go live to ensure continuity.
Governance and change activities included a focused super user program with 20 super users trained early, three user training sessions prior to go live and intensive functional scoping and testing involving internal subject matter experts. Those governance practices supported end to end testing cycles across business functions and enabled the project team to replicate a small set of legacy behaviors through configuration. Functional ownership and testing responsibilities were distributed across Purchasing, Finance, Engineering, Projects, Manufacturing and Servicing to ensure operational readiness.
Outcomes reported by SMD included smooth adoption and a quiet go live due to thorough testing and the super user training model, and the establishment of Platned managed services to monitor system performance and escalate complex support issues. SMD has scoped follow on work to digitize stores and introduce automated part picking integration with IFS Supply Chain Management, and to evaluate new AI enabled scheduling capabilities in forthcoming IFS releases.

Manufacturing | 236 | $78M | United Kingdom | IFS | IFS Cloud Project Management | Project Portfolio Management | 2023 |
In 2023 SMD selected IFS partner Platned to execute a major upgrade, moving its long‑running IFS Apps 7.5 environment to IFS Cloud Project Management as the enterprise Project Portfolio Management platform. The program began in October 2023 and was delivered on schedule in a 12 month timeline, with go live completed by end September 2024, within budget and providing a seamless switchover for more than 250 users across two UK sites.
The implementation replicated core ERP and project modules from IFS Apps 7.5, including Purchasing, Finance, Supply Chain, Parts, Engineering, Projects, Manufacturing, Servicing and time recording, while embedding new AI-driven capabilities exposed by IFS Cloud Project Management. Configuration work preserved the core codebase unmodified, with targeted configuration to replicate a small set of legacy behaviors and to enforce more robust permissions and security policies.
SMD retained an on premise instance to protect IP and maintain performance, and the rollout preserved critical integrations with advanced CAD engineering tools that support offshore engineering and maintenance workflows. The technical delivery model was predominantly remote at 95 percent, with Platned on site for key milestones and a week post go live, and the program included infrastructure management, monitoring and a 24 7 helpdesk as part of a follow-on managed service agreement.
Governance and adoption focused on a super‑user driven testing and training regime, with three pre go live training sessions and a cohort of 20 super users who led testing cycles and cascaded knowledge into operational teams. Operational ownership remains with SMDs small IT and business systems team, with Platned providing escalation and managed support, and the next phase of work scoped to extend IFS Cloud Project Management into automated parts picking and to evaluate the 24R2 release for AI enabled planning and scheduling.

Manufacturing | 236 | $78M | United Kingdom | IFS | IFS Manufacturing Execution System (MES) | Manufacturing Execution System | 2023 |
In 2023 SMD selected IFS partner Platned to execute a major upgrade from IFS Apps 7.5 to the evergreen IFS Cloud platform, and the program included deployment of IFS Manufacturing Execution System (MES) as a core manufacturing layer. The project maintained an on premise instance for IP security, ran on a 12 month schedule and was delivered on time and within budget with a seamless go live switchover for more than 250 users. SMD had used IFS Apps 7.5 across the business for over ten years, which informed configuration decisions during the uplift to IFS Cloud.
The implementation replicated functional modules previously used across Purchasing, Finance, Supply Chain, Parts, Engineering, Projects, Manufacturing, Servicing and time recording, while embedding Manufacturing Execution System capabilities to support shop floor execution and digitisation of stores such as parts picking. The IFS Manufacturing Execution System (MES) workstream leveraged configuration rather than core code changes to preserve custom behaviour, and additional AI enabled capabilities from IFS Cloud were introduced to support future planning and scheduling use cases.
Critical integrations were preserved, including maintained interfaces to advanced CAD engineering tools to support engineering and offshore maintenance workflows, and the single IFS instance continued to serve SMD’s offshore division alongside two UK sites. Delivery was predominantly remote, with 95 percent of project work performed off site and targeted on site presence for key milestones and a week post go live to ensure business continuity. The on premise infrastructure was retained because the business continued to invest in its own infrastructure rather than moving to third party hosting.
Governance and adoption focused on a trained super user community and partner managed delivery, with 20 super users trained early, three pre go live training sessions for broader teams and hands on testing cycles to drive acceptance. Platned now provides managed services and support for IFS infrastructure and a 24/7 support desk, allowing SMD’s five person IT and Business Systems team to escalate complex issues while handling the majority of tickets internally. The upgrade outcome reported was smooth adoption and a quiet go live, and SMD is planning follow on work to digitise stores and evaluate forthcoming AI enabled scheduling in the IFS 24R2 release.
