J Sainsbury's began a program in 2017 to replace its on‑premise Oracle E‑Business Suite with Oracle Cloud ERP, positioning the finance function on Oracle Fusion Finance as the initial cloud deployment. In June 2018 an interim Finance Senior Product Owner was appointed to lead finance product ownership activities after the previous holder emigrated; that role participated directly in the review and selection of Oracle Fusion Finance and evaluated potential implementation partners. The implementation was scoped as a cloud‑first, finance‑centric transformation replacing EBS, focused on standardizing core financial modules (general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets) and establishing program governance, vendor/module selection, and product management for enterprise financial processes.

In 2020 J Sainsbury’s selected and began deploying Oracle Cloud HCM to replace a highly customized, 10‑year‑old Oracle E-Business Suite HRMS. The implementation standardized Core HR on a single automated cloud platform and modernized recruiting and onboarding to better process approximately 57,000 annual hires and support an employee base of about 141,517.
Sainsbury’s configured Oracle Cloud HCM modules for Core HR, recruiting and onboarding and leveraged Oracle PaaS to address complex, unique requirements that had previously relied on on‑premises customizations. The program focused on enterprise‑wide HR execution and user experience, with a projected £16M reduction in HRIT costs and stated improvements in employee productivity and HR execution.

| Pegasystems | Legacy | Pega Platform | Business Process Management | ERP Services and Operations | n/a | 2021 | 2021 |
In 2021, J Sainsbury's implemented Pega Platform to reimagine customer service and create a unified view of customer interactions across its retail estate. The program targeted customer service teams across more than 1,400 retail locations and contact centers and extended to support the Argos brand within a multi brand, multichannel scope.
The deployment centers on Pega Customer Service case management capabilities within the Business Process Management category, delivering a 360-degree customer profile that includes query and order history, gestures of good will, and complaint records. Agents now use an intuitive user interface that guides interaction flows, replacing manual Word based response templates with structured dropdown driven categorization and automated suggested responses. Functional modules implemented include case orchestration, interaction history, an in store staff portal, omni channel routing, and a Food Cost Recovery function to capture and categorize quality issue data for supplier recharging.
Architecturally the solution is powered by Pega Cloud, providing a centralized case repository and continuous delivery of updates while maintaining consistent agent workflows across contact centers and in store portals. The implementation unifies channel interactions into a single case object model so cases can be progressed through configured life cycle stages and automated escalations. The deployment leverages platform workflow and decision capabilities typical of Business Process Management systems to standardize categorization and response automation.
Governance and process changes accompanied the technical build, instituting standardized complaint categorization, response templates surfaced through the platform UI, and defined case management lifecycles for complaints and refunds. Agents follow guided scripts and decisioning paths which reduced manual search and contextualization tasks and enabled the capture of supplier fault data within case records for downstream financial reconciliation. Operational coverage includes contact center agents and in store staff, with workflows rolled out to support consistent handling across brands and sites.
Reported results after deployment include approximately 2 million cases handled annually through the platform, approximately £5 million in supplier cost recovery annually via the Food Cost Recovery function, and more than 40,000 full time employee hours freed each year through workflow automation. Sainsbury's also reports improved omni channel interaction consistency and a 45 percent reduction in maintenance and support costs.
