In 2018 the Australian Department of Defence implemented SAP S/4 HANA as its ERP Financial platform. The program migrates from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 and is being delivered with IBM as the systems integrator, with Azure AU Central hosting the SAP S/4 HANA development and production environments and a secure connection from Defence’s Protected Network. The Azure-based deployment is configured to be accessible by Defence personnel within Australia and deployed overseas, and it is planned to support some 85,000 users once in production.
SAP S/4 HANA is being configured with finance, human resources, logistics, engineering, maintenance and estate management capabilities, using SAP’s next generation Model Defence Organisation solution to instantiate best practice digital processes across those domains. The program roadmap called for improved financial reporting capabilities to be deployed in 2018 followed by a larger logistics and maintenance capability in 2022, reflecting a staged rollout of ERP Financial modules and process automation.
Architecturally the solution is built on a Protected cloud infrastructure in Azure to meet Defence security certification and accreditation requirements, providing development and production separation and access to trusted Azure services. The implementation aligns the SAP S/4 HANA ERP Financial platform with existing Microsoft cloud usage at Defence, including Office 365 and Dynamics 365, creating integrated cloud-to-cloud operational patterns while retaining Defence control over protected network connectivity.
Governance and delivery are structured around multi-vendor collaboration between the Department of Defence, Microsoft Azure, SAP and IBM, with security accreditation and resilience central to operational readiness. The Department intends SAP S/4 HANA ERP Financial to modernise, integrate and transform its approach to managing finances, human resources, logistics, engineering, maintenance and estate management, and to provide a near real-time integrated view of critical information to inform decision making.

In 2019, the Australian Department of Defence began implementing SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central under the SAP Model Defence Organisation MDO ERP Program. The initiative is structured as a multitranche program, with Tranche one active and additional tranches planned to expand Core HR capability across the organization.
The deployment centers on SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central and related SAP SuccessFactors Talent Suit modules, configured to support HR master data, organisational management, position and assignment processing, and talent lifecycle workflows. Work as an SAP HR Functional Lead includes business process analysis and configuration of Employee Central data models, security roles, and automated HR transactions consistent with Core HR practices.
Integrations are explicitly scoped to an organisational structure integrated solution with the Force Element Structure to support Military Operations and Planning, and Logistics and Land Material Maintenance LLMM. Future tranche planning includes integration with the SAP S/4 HANA SAP-HR System to unify personnel records and workforce planning data between SuccessFactors Employee Central and the broader S/4 HANA ERP stack.
Governance and rollout are organized by tranche, with business process redesign and organisational model alignment driven by the SAP HR Functional Lead. The program emphasizes organisational mapping to Force Element Structure, staged configuration and validation of HR processes, and establishing workforce data governance and role based access patterns for ongoing Core HR operations.
