In 2013 Ballad Health implemented UKG Workforce Central Payroll (ex Kronos Workforce Payroll) as its Payroll application. The deployment centralized payroll processing for Ballad Health, covering payroll operations for approximately 13,800 employees and aligning HR and finance payroll workflows.
UKG Workforce Central Payroll was configured to manage core payroll modules including gross to net calculation, tax and withholding management, deductions and garnishment handling, direct deposit processing and payroll reporting. The implementation included pay rule configuration to accommodate healthcare shift differentials and multiple pay cycles typical of hospital payroll operations. UKG Workforce Central Payroll supported batch processing and period end payroll runs with configurable reporting used by payroll and finance staff.
The system consolidated time and attendance inputs from point of care and administrative data entry workflows, capturing hours for clinical and administrative roles such as radiology, occupational health, patient check in, inbound and outbound call centers, and front desk personnel. Payroll processing workflows were coordinated with operational activities including patient payments and claims processing to align pay period closures with clinical operations. Payroll data reconciliation and payroll file generation were performed inside the payroll application and delivered to finance disbursement channels.
Governance was structured across HR, payroll and finance teams with defined data entry validation, approval gates and payroll reconciliation cycles. Operational processes were adapted to include regular time entry correction windows, payroll validation checkpoints and coordination between departmental managers and occupational health for exception handling. Training and process documentation focused on reducing manual entry from decentralized clinical units while centralizing payroll execution.

| Epic Systems | Legacy | Epic Slicer Dicer | Analytics and BI | Analytics and BI | n/a | 2018 | 2018 |
In 2018, Ballad Health deployed Epic Slicer Dicer as part of its Analytics and BI platform. Epic Slicer Dicer was implemented alongside the Cogito reporting stack including Epic Clarity, Caboodle, Cubes and Business Objects to support enterprise reporting and self service analytics.
Implementation emphasis centered on Caboodle datamarts and ETL orchestration, with custom data models developed in the Enterprise Data Warehouse Caboodle to find efficiencies and meet business reporting needs. The team built ETL pipelines using SQL Server Integration Services to import flat files and to automate loading of key operational datasets into Caboodle, delivering dedicated datamarts for Market Share, hospital supply ordering, IT ticketing data, and multiple hospital resource utilization metrics.
The project included the Cogito reporting portion of an Epic 2015 major version upgrade and ongoing maintenance of development, test, release and production environments for Epic Clarity and Caboodle. Operational infrastructure maintenance covers approximately 20 Windows servers hosting the Cogito Clarity Epic platform, plus virtual servers and hardware supporting Cubes and Business Objects.
Governance and operational discipline were implemented through a daily maintenance policy to ensure nightly ETL and reporting processes succeed or are remediated in a timely manner, along with patch and upgrade delivery workflows. Ballad Health maintained subject matter expertise in SQL to support report developers, and the Market Share datamart explicitly offloaded import, archival, and quality checks to the warehouse, making reporting easier and more efficient and increasing productivity for the marketing team.
