In 2020, Blandin Foundation deployed Amazon EC2 as its primary compute platform under the Application Hosting and Computing Services category. The implementation provisioned Amazon EC2 to host production and development workloads for the 50 employee nonprofit, supporting program delivery and core administrative systems as part of an initiative to move two data centers to AWS.
Architecturally the deployment established isolated Amazon VPC networks with Amazon EC2 instances sized for organizational scale, security groups and IAM roles to enforce access control, and Elastic Load Balancing to distribute application traffic. Operational capabilities implemented included instance provisioning and AMI management for image consistency, automated scaling policies to handle variable workloads, and CloudWatch based monitoring and logging for operational telemetry. Persistent storage patterns used EBS volumes attached to EC2 instances and S3 for object storage where appropriate.
An internal AWS Cloud Architect led cross functional teams through phased rollouts, formalizing provisioning workflows, tagging and naming standards, and cost center alignment for governance. Operational ownership was centralized within a cloud operations function responsible for instance lifecycle management, security baseline enforcement, and incident response. The architecture maintained flexibility for multi cloud evaluation, as the organization was considering Azure or GCP for future expansion.
