In 2018 BMI Group implemented SAP S/4 HANA Finance as its ERP Financial system within a greenfield pan-European S4/HANA programme, aligning finance operations across its European business units. The implementation was positioned alongside a broader digital strategy that included a new Digital Lab and Tech Hub in Reading, and it was designed to support core finance and reporting functions for the group.
SAP S/4 HANA Finance was configured to support Record to Report workflows and core finance capabilities, including general ledger processing, period close orchestration, financial reporting and consolidation. Configuration emphasis centered on standard finance controls, chart of accounts harmonization and automated close sequencing to align cross‑entity reporting, consistent with ERP Financial practice.
The programme explicitly integrated SAP S4/HANA Procurement and Ariba solutions, with Source to Pay architecture and procurement application integration scoped to operate alongside SAP S/4 HANA Finance. Operational coverage targeted finance and procurement business functions across European sites, and the Source to Pay Solutions Architect role was defined to facilitate procurement and Ariba implementation and ongoing support.
Governance for the rollout was organized through the Head of Solution Architecture, with a Solutions Architect for Report to Report reporting into that function and providing architecture inputs to functional and technical teams. The governance model emphasized architecture ownership, best practice recommendations and cross‑functional coordination between finance, procurement and IT for the pan‑European SAP S/4 HANA Finance deployment.

The SAP Concur Travel rollout established a centralized travel booking and expense reporting platform to support BMI Group's Travel & Expense and Procure to Pay business functions across its global operations, with local operational presence noted in Reading, England.
The deployment focused on standard Travel Management capabilities including travel booking, expense submission and approval workflows, T&E policy enforcement, and expense reconciliation automation. Configuration work emphasized approval routing aligned to Procure to Pay controls, profile and supplier data alignment for purchasing and travel vendors, and process documentation to support operational consistency.
Integrations were executed with SAP S4HANA to validate business process requirements and enable financial posting and reconciliation, while Celonis BPM tool was used for business process mapping and continuous process analysis. The implementation also aligned with Purchasing process areas to ensure data flow between travel bookings, supplier invoices, and procure to pay workflows.
Governance and operationalization were assigned to a Global Process Specialist for Procure to Pay and Travel & Expense, responsible for process optimization, SLA and KPI monitoring, change management, knowledge management, training, and validation of change requests. Ongoing collaboration with cross functional modules supported change request implementation and analytic review of business process requirements in S4HANA.
