In 2021 British Steel began a program to deploy SAP S/4 HANA as its core ERP Financial platform. The initiative is positioned as an SAP S/4 HANA implementation supporting Finance, Procurement, Commercial, Production Planning and Manufacturing functions across the business.
The SAP S/4 HANA implementation included standard ERP Financial capabilities such as integrated financial accounting, procurement workflows, commercial contract and order management, and production planning and manufacturing process support. Configuration work followed Agile methodology to align standard S/4 HANA modules with business process requirements, and the program emphasized change enablement and business process stabilization in parallel with technical configuration.
Operational coverage for the program spanned cross-functional business functions rather than a single department, with implementation work tied into a wider portfolio that included Capex and Opex projects, a maintained risk register, and data analytics and performance tracking activities. The program was organized to coordinate commercial, planning and shop floor processes with finance and procurement process owners, reflecting an integrated enterprise resource planning scope.
Governance and rollout activities were formalized with a circa £10M programme budget, a delivery cadence based on Agile principles, and a change network of 150 coached change champions. The programme lead oversaw a portfolio of approximately 500 projects and set a targeted go live date of 1st November 2022, with governance covering project intake, risk management and business readiness activities.

In 2020 British Steel implemented MHR iTrent HR to operationalize payroll within a five week window. British Steel signed the contract with MHR on February 20 2020 and completed the initial deployment with core payroll elements fully operational in March 2020, enabling 3,500 employees to be paid in line with the requirements of the Jingye Group acquisition.
The implementation centered on MHR iTrent HR payroll modules and automated payroll processing capabilities aligned to Core HR platform workflows, including pay calculation, statutory compliance orchestration, and scheduled payroll runs. Enhanced security measures were introduced during the initial phase, and further HR functionality and employee engagement features are planned for phased addition to the platform.
Deployment covered British Steel facilities across the United Kingdom and Europe and primarily impacted HR and payroll operations for the specified employee population. The rapid rollout was executed to meet a contractual closing milestone and provided continuity of pay to the workforce, enabling the final signing of the acquisition to proceed.
Subsequent phases will extend the MHR iTrent HR footprint to broaden communication and engagement capabilities while adding further functionality as required, with governance structured around phased releases and security hardening to support ongoing additions to the Core HR solution.

In 2021 British Steel implemented SAP Analytics Cloud as its Analytics and BI application. The SAP Analytics Cloud deployment was executed as part of an application renewal strategy that also included a new SAP HANA greenfield implementation and modernization of the MES application layer, positioning analytics as a consolidated reporting and planning layer.
SAP Analytics Cloud was configured to provide cross-functional reporting and planning capabilities aligned to core SAP functional modules, with implementation signals tied to finance and controlling, materials management, production planning, quality management and sales distribution. The implementation emphasized model building, dashboard and story creation, and self-service analytics workflows typical of an Analytics and BI platform, enabling business analysts to convert requirements into governed analytic deliverables.
Architecturally the SAP Analytics Cloud environment was aligned to the new SAP HANA data estate and designed to accept operational feeds from the modernized MES application layer, enabling combined operational and financial reporting. Data modeling and semantic layer work supported source integration across SAP HANA and MES, and configurations targeted role-based access for finance, procurement, production, quality and sales teams.
Governance and delivery followed ITIL and Agile principles with project controls reflecting Prince2 style planning, business analyst ownership for requirements to delivery, and management of third party delivery to agreed timescales, cost and quality. The rollout included structured SIT and UAT phases governed by service management processes, with business analysts and technical teams coordinating testing, defect resolution and release criteria for the SAP Analytics Cloud implementation.
