In 2015 Citizens Bank implemented Bottomline Paymode-X AP Automation to achieve end-to-end accounts payable automation, deploying the solution to centralize invoice-to-pay processes under the AP Automation category. The initiative targeted corporate accounts payable and treasury workflows, consolidating invoice intake, validation, approval routing, and electronic payment orchestration into a single program to reduce manual handoffs and standardize controls across the bank.
Bottomline Paymode-X AP Automation was configured with core AP modules typical of the platform, including automated invoice capture and data extraction, configurable approval workflows, supplier enrollment and portal capabilities, electronic payment execution and remittance enrichment, and exception management and audit trails. The deployment emphasized workflow automation, rule-based approvals, scheduled payment processing, and supplier onboarding to streamline invoice processing and payment delivery.
Architecturally the implementation was executed as a cloud-hosted payment and invoice automation platform, with integration points built to reconcile payment files and remittance information into internal accounting and treasury workflows. Governance changes accompanied the rollout, centralizing approval authorities, standardizing supplier onboarding policies, and instrumenting exception handling and audit controls to support operational oversight. The program delivered an end-to-end AP Automation capability for Citizens Bank as articulated in the Bottomline case study.

In 2016 Citizens Bank engaged FIS Global to implement FIS Core Banking, initiating a core banking revamp in partnership with its existing vendor. The project scope explicitly included an upgrade of the bank’s core platform and the concurrent implementation of a new mobile platform and a middleware layer to support integration and channel orchestration.
The implementation consolidated functional modules including lending, collections, deposits and customer relationship applications within the FIS Core Banking environment. Configuration work focused on standard core banking workflows consistent with the category, including account processing and deposit ledger functions, loan servicing and collections automation, and customer profile and relationship management capabilities.
A new middleware layer was implemented to centralize integration patterns between the FIS Core Banking platform and front end channels, with the mobile platform provisioned as a primary digital channel. The bank was operating FIS Systematics prior to the program, and the engagement was structured to extend and replatform core services while standardizing APIs and integration points for downstream systems and external interfaces.
Governance for the program included appointment of a programme director based in Rhode Island and execution in partnership with FIS Global, with a centralized program office model guiding configuration, testing and rollout across lending, deposits, collections and customer relationship functions. Process redesign efforts were aligned to core banking module handoffs and middleware-driven orchestration to reduce fragmentation between digital channels and back-office operations.
