| SAP | SAP ERP ECC 6.0 | SAP S/4 HANA | ERP Financial | ERP Financial Management | n/a | 2019 | 2021 |
In 2019 Deutsche Bank began migrating from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 to SAP S/4 HANA in an ERP Financial program executed as a scale out implementation that continued through 2021. The initiative was scoped to replace aging SAP based financial systems across global finance, risk and regulatory reporting functions, with objectives to improve throughput for high transaction volumes, support Basel III and IFRS 9 compliance, and enable real time analytics across business units.
Deutsche Bank implemented SAP S/4 HANA Finance as the core financial module, complemented by SAP Fiori as the employee UX layer and SAP HANA as the in memory database engine. Functional workstreams included accounting, regulatory reporting, treasury and risk management, plus ABAP based custom code remediation where ABAP CDS views were introduced to replace legacy transaction patterns and HANA optimized SQL reduced report runtimes. Batch processing and background job orchestration were tuned with SAP background processing tools and increased RFC connection pooling to handle treasury bursts.
The deployment used a distributed scale out topology rather than a single instance scale up, with multi node HANA clusters consisting of a primary node and multiple worker nodes to shard in memory processing. Infrastructure followed a hybrid cloud model, retaining IBM Power Systems on premises with NVMe storage and high throughput RoCE networking for low latency database operations, while hosting Fiori front end and dev test workloads on public cloud providers AWS and Google Cloud and maintaining a warm standby DR environment in the cloud. SAP HANA system replication and dynamic tiering were applied for failover and hot cold data management.
Integrations and migration tooling were explicit parts of the program, with SAP as the software provider and IBM, Accenture and T Systems engaged for consulting and infrastructure services. An integration layer using SAP PO connected to external market systems such as SWIFT and Bloomberg, and data migration used SAP Migration Cockpit together with IBM InfoSphere ETL to move roughly three petabytes of legacy ECC and custom data. Governance controls addressed BaFin, GDPR and MiFID II requirements by isolating PII on dedicated HANA nodes, enabling SAP audit logging and cloud data monitoring.
Post go live Deutsche Bank reported explicit outcomes and a roadmap for further expansion, including faster financial close and reporting through real time analytics, reduced operational footprint from legacy retirements and improved compliance alignment with IFRS 9. Published benchmarks from the program show month end close compressing from seven days to under 24 hours and risk report generation dropping from hours to minutes, system uptime improving toward near zero downtime. The roadmap includes additional S/4 HANA module rollout, continued hybrid cloud migration and integrating AI and machine learning for predictive analytics.

| Mercer | Legacy | Mercer Darwin Benefits (formerly Thomsons Online Benefits) | Benefits Administration | HCM | n/a | 2014 | 2014 |
In 2014 Deutsche Bank engaged Mercer Darwin Benefits (formerly Thomsons Online Benefits) to administer its online benefits and payroll functions. This Mercer Darwin Benefits deployment targeted Benefits Administration and operated within a managed accounts team that provided specialist advisory and client care for multinational corporate clients including Goldman Sachs and RBS.
The implementation focused on online benefits administration and payroll processing, emphasizing enrollment workflows, lifecycle event handling, and reconciliation of live employee benefit records. Mercer Darwin Benefits served as the operational platform for case management, helpdesk escalation, and resolution of technical platform queries.
Operational activities were managed from a London managed accounts center between April 2014 and January 2015, supporting Deutsche Bank’s employee population alongside other large clients. The team developed and maintained working relationships and workflow-level integrations with third party Human Resource teams and insurance providers, functioning as the escalation point for client helpdesk incidents and coordinating insurer interactions while handling verbal and written employee queries.
Governance centered on management and reconciliation of live databases, established case escalation procedures, and maintenance of administration processes across HR and payroll functions. The support model combined client-facing specialist advice with routine administration tasks and team coordination responsibilities, reflecting a managed service approach within Benefits Administration.
