The deployment positioned SAP HCM (HR) as the authoritative system for employee master data and organizational management within Gerdau's Core HR landscape.
The implementation focused on Core HR functional modules including personnel administration, organizational management, and employee master data management, configured to support standard HR workflows and role based access. Configuration work emphasized data model alignment for employees and organizational units, and the orchestration of personnel events into the HR data store.
All the interfaces of SAP HR system with other web or SAP systems were instrumented using ALE iDocs, SAP PI, webservices, and RFCs, enabling synchronous and asynchronous transactions across the SAP landscape and external web endpoints. Architectural design used SAP PI as middleware for message routing and transformation, ALE iDocs for bulk and asynchronous replication, RFCs for direct system calls, and webservices for external system interactions, establishing a heterogeneous integration fabric.
Governance centered on HR master data stewardship, interface change control, and operational monitoring of iDoc and webservice queues, with procedures for error handling and reconciliation between source systems and SAP HCM. The program covered HR business functions across personnel administration and organizational management, and included process level controls to manage data consistency and interface reliability.

In 2016, Gerdau implemented GE Digital’s SmartSignal as part of an Asset Performance Management deployment across its Brazilian steel operations. The initial deployment began as a pilot covering 50 critical assets to validate predictive maintenance workflows and to detect incipient equipment failures that cause unplanned downtime.
The implementation combined SmartSignal with a Historian for high frequency data capture and condition monitoring, establishing predictive analytics, anomaly detection, and alerting capabilities. Configuration emphasized model tuning, alarm thresholds, and automated alert routing to maintenance teams to enable condition based interventions and to feed maintenance planning processes.
Following two early detections during the pilot that paid for the initial effort, Gerdau scaled the solution to monitor 600 assets across 11 plants in Brazil. Operational coverage included on-site maintenance crews and centralized maintenance planners, with dashboards and alert streams integrated into plant operations for faster fault identification.
Rollout governance employed phased scaling, validation gates for model acceptance, and centralized oversight for threshold management and alarm suppression. The SmartSignal Asset Performance Management deployment supported broader predictive maintenance adoption at Gerdau and improved maintenance outcomes and asset availability as reported during the pilot and subsequent rollout.
