In 2013, Jo-Ann Stores implemented MicroStrategy ONE Analytics to consolidate HR reporting and analytics for its HR Services division. The deployment integrated a third-party Workforce Management System and Jo-Ann Stores PeopleSoft HR, enabling outsourced workflows for time and attendance scheduling, recruitment and vendor management, human resource management, taxation and payroll, and customer service, with MicroStrategy ONE Analytics serving as the Analytics and BI reporting layer.
The engagement delivered canonical data models and data marts to support a Business Intelligence Data Warehouse, with data mapping, logical modeling, class diagrams and ER diagrams used to define structures. Developers created SQL queries for online reports surfaced in MicroStrategy dashboards, and applied Execution Plan analysis, SQL Profiler and Database Engine Tuning Advisor to optimize query and database performance. Custom front-end and integration work used ASP.NET, VB.net, AJAX, C# and JavaScript to extend dashboards and user interfaces.
Integrations included an interface to load employee demographic and PeopleSoft-specific data directly from the HR system, Informatica ETL extracting from DB2 sources, loading staging tables on Teradata and moving target tables to SQL Server via DTS, and consolidating Oracle and flat file sources into a single Oracle-based data warehouse. An interface was also developed to bring Non-Labor transactions from Oracle PA Financials into Clarity, creating a cross-system data flow that supported reporting across source, staging, mart and MicroStrategy layers.
Delivery and governance used a corporate Agile SDLC with Scrum Work Pro, supplemented by JAD sessions to align management, development and user teams on requirements. The team produced UML artifacts including use case, activity, sequence and deployment diagrams, and authored mapping documents to guide ETL development and ongoing DataMart support. A Balance Scorecard approach was used to develop program strategy and metrics for a grants program, with MicroStrategy dashboards and custom reports used for analysis and monitoring.
Testing and operational validation included user-acceptance activities with data validation and metrics calculation across every layer, shell scripts to invoke PL/SQL and send notifications, and support and maintenance of DataMarts alongside enhancements in Business Objects, Cognos and Informatica. The implementation positions MicroStrategy ONE Analytics as the centralized Analytics and BI platform for HR Services reporting at Jo-Ann Stores.
