In 2016 Malaysia Airlines selected Amadeus Altea NDC as its PSS, initiating a move away from SITA Horizon with no formal migration dates announced. Industry observers project the operational cutover to occur in 2017 or mid-2018, placing the likely migration beyond the term of the existing SITA agreement.
The Amadeus Altea NDC implementation centers on core Passenger Service System capabilities consistent with a PSS, including centralized reservations and inventory management, departure control and NDC-enabled distribution and merchandising functionality. Configuration and productization work is expected to focus on standardizing fare and ancillary merchandising workflows and aligning booking and check-in processes to Amadeus Altea NDC.
Operational scope described in planning covers commercial, reservations, distribution and ground operations teams, with the PSS positioned as the primary system for passenger servicing and channel distribution. Malaysia Airlines Amadeus Altea NDC PSS will be the authoritative platform for passenger records and distribution orchestration across the airline’s commercial functions.
The decision has material competitive implications for SITA, T2RL reporting characterizes the loss as a significant setback to SITA’s passenger services business and suggests SITA may need to consider strategic options including a sale of the business. T2RL estimates SITA has invested between $200 million and $250 million to date against an original board estimate of $100 to $120 million, a factor that increases scrutiny around program viability and contract renewals.
