In 2022, Petco implemented HireRight Employment Background Checks as a BackGround Screening solution integrated with Workday to streamline candidate screening and user provisioning across its retail operations. The deployment covered Petco’s North American footprint, leveraging HireRight’s Workday integration and User Sync to automate screening initiation and user account lifecycle management for hiring workflows.
The implementation configured HireRight Employment Background Checks to automatically launch candidate consent forms when an applicant accepts an offer in Workday, reducing duplicate data entry and starting screening sooner. Screening packages are automatically assigned based on the job code in Workday, and hiring managers can request checks and view progress and completion statuses from the screening tab inside Workday, removing the need to separately log into HireRight’s portal.
Petco used HireRight’s User Sync feature as a daily integration, uploading a spreadsheet that HireRight processes to create, modify, and delete user accounts and apply permission levels from a job matrix. Permission settings were mapped to role profiles so that, for example, employee relations users can have full access to screening requests and results while hiring managers are limited to launching checks and viewing status updates, and new users can typically be activated within one working day. The User Sync workflow supported roughly 500 potential initiators of background checks and was deployed across all 1,500 retail locations in North America.
Governance and operational changes focused on centralizing user management and enforcing role based access controls through the automated User Sync feed, enabling faster onboarding and rapid deactivation when users change roles or leave. Outcomes documented by Petco include the removal of one and a half full time employees worth of administrative work and a reduction in average time to hire by three days comparing June 2023 through May 2024 to June 2022 through May 2023, and Petco is considering expanding the User Sync usage to international locations.

In 2013 Petco implemented Oracle Retail (ex Retek) as its Retail Management platform. The program positioned IT as a business partner to Merchandising, eCommerce, Inventory, Supply Chain, Space Management, HR, Finance, and Integration teams, and designated implementation ownership for the Oracle Retail Merchandise System RMS, RPAS planning and forecasting, and accounting modules ReSA and ReIM.
The implementation covered a broad set of Oracle Retail modules including Oracle RMS, RPM, RPAS components such as Merchandise Financial Planning MFP, Category Management, Item Planning and RDF, plus PIM capabilities. Oracle Retail (ex Retek) served as the central Retail Management backbone, supporting merchandise system activity, planning workflows, item master stewardship, and accounting feeds into ReSA ReIM and RMS accounting flows.
Integrations tied Oracle Retail into Petco’s omnichannel stack, with eCommerce front end workstreams on IBM WebSphere, order orchestration through Sterling Order Management, and web content delivered via Adobe Experience Manager. The program also incorporated PIM and new ERP systems into the retail ecosystem, enabling merchandise planning outputs and replenishment signals to flow into order management and financial accounting processes.
Governance was run as a cross functional implementation led by IT with a single implementation lead responsible for over 20 capabilities and ongoing operations. The team retained responsibility to fully implement ERP and Omni Web for Petco.com and to maintain daily operations and development across all deployed retail systems, embedding operational sustainment alongside rollout activities.
