In 2021, Roche implemented SAP S/4 HANA as its ERP Financial system, replacing SAP ERP ECC 6.0 and establishing the SAP S/4 HANA platform as the core finance backbone for the enterprise. The deployment targeted Roche's finance and controlling functions to unify accounting, reporting, and close processes across its global organization, aligning the company with the ERP Financial category capabilities for live transactional processing and embedded analytics.
The implementation configured standard ERP Financial modules including Financial Accounting, Controlling, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Asset Accounting, treasury-related functions and the period close orchestration typical of SAP S/4 HANA deployments. Configuration work emphasized master data harmonization, ledger and chart of accounts alignment, and the activation of embedded analytics, simulation and decision support to enable near real time financial reporting and scenario analysis within SAP S/4 HANA.
Architecturally the program migrated transactional workloads from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 onto the SAP S/4 HANA platform leveraging the HANA in-memory database and the application layer capabilities of SAP S/4 HANA, while preserving integration interfaces to other enterprise systems through SAP integration frameworks. The implementation was designed to support flexible deployment models offered by SAP including cloud, on-premise and hybrid options, and to provide a foundation for consolidated financial processes and live operational reporting.
Governance changes accompanied the technical migration, with centralized control over financial master data, standardized close and reconciliation workflows and formal change management for chart of accounts and posting rules. Rollout sequencing focused on finance process standardization, technical cutover from SAP ERP ECC 6.0 and the establishment of ongoing governance and support procedures to operate SAP S/4 HANA as Roche's ERP Financial system.

Operationally the Phenom deployment operates alongside Workday, configured to complement existing e-recruitment and HRIS processes while servicing the full recruitment lifecycle from sourcing through offer. The system is governed through Talent Acquisition Partner workflows and frequent collaboration with People and Culture stakeholders, reflecting a shared operating model for candidate ownership and handoff between sourcing and HR operations.
Day to day usage is centered on sourcing, screening, assessing and offer management by recruiting teams in Switzerland, with Talent Acquisition Partners and People and Culture peers using Phenom Talent CRM to coordinate candidate engagement and hiring workflows. The implementation therefore links recruiter CRM capabilities with Roche hiring processes without introducing external implementation partner references.

In 2023 Roche began implementing SAP Asset Strategy and Performance Management as part of a companywide Asset Performance Management initiative to harmonize asset management and maintenance processes across its pharmaceutical and diagnostics divisions. The effort is tied to Roche's ongoing SAP S/4HANA journey to harmonize business processes on all sites and divisions around the world, positioning SAP Asset Strategy and Performance Management to centralize asset strategy and reliability data.
Roche configured SAP Asset Strategy and Performance Management to perform criticality evaluations directly in the SAP system rather than using spreadsheets, and to reflect criticality results in the maintenance strategy so preventive maintenance plans can be generated from system data. The implementation codifies equipment classification into high, medium, and low criticality tiers and maps each tier to a standardized maintenance strategy, embedding reliability engineering practices into system workflows.
The program is being implemented to operate alongside SAP S/4HANA and to connect supply chain information flows into operations, manufacturing, and design so that insights travel quickly from plant level execution into broader business processes. Roche is also enabling SAP Service and Asset Manager to provide maintenance plans and work orders to technicians on mobile devices, including instant material reservations and access to maintenance manuals, and to extend controlled access to service providers for design insights and collaboration.
Governance changes emphasize business process harmonization to resolve the handover from original manufacturer to engineering to maintenance, and to close the loop between asset strategy and maintenance execution. The implementation introduces contextualized information during the work process to provide real time insights for decision making and sets up collaboration patterns with suppliers, OEMs, and logistics providers to support risk resilient operations.
Cost reduction and increased asset reliability are named drivers for the initiative and risk resilience is positioned as an investment for the future following SAP recommended strategies. Roche is in the middle of the journey and no sites are live yet, with the system configured to scale across sites and divisions as rollout proceeds.
