In 2015, Smith+Nephew implemented Microsoft Dynamics AX as its ERP Financial platform. The engagement focused on rolling out and maintaining Microsoft Dynamics AX2012 to provide a consolidated finance application footprint for the manufacturing business, with primary coverage across finance and accounting functions.
Configuration work concentrated on core ERP Financial modules and workflows, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, multi book accounting, and financial reporting. Implementation tasks included chart of accounts design, period close process configuration, statutory reporting setup, and automated journal posting to align manufacturing cost flows with corporate ledgers.
Deployment addressed integration touch points between transactional manufacturing processes and the finance ledger, aligning inventory valuation and cost accounting with financial postings and supporting intercompany accounting and reconciliations. Microsoft Dynamics AX2012 was positioned to centralize ledger reconciliation and month end activities by bridging operational transaction data and corporate finance records.
Governance and sustainment were structured around role based security, release controls, and a maintenance model for ongoing support of Microsoft Dynamics AX2012. Process restructuring emphasized standardized close calendars and centralized financial master data to support continued maintenance and operational consistency.

| Workday | Legacy | Workday Absence Management | Absence and Leave Management | HCM | n/a | 2020 | 2020 |
In 2020, Smith+Nephew implemented Workday Absence Management. The deployment targeted Absence and Leave Management capabilities to centralize leave administration within HR and the Global Business Services organization, with an initial operational focus on EMEA HR cohorts.
The implementation configured standard absence types and entitlement rules, employee self-service for leave requests, manager approval workflows, absence balance and accrual calculations, and configurable notifications and calendar visibility. Workday Absence Management was tested in sandbox environments and supported by data quality audits, role-based training, and the creation of over 30 user guides to standardize operational procedures.
Operational coverage emphasized HR coordinators and GBS HR Services across EMEA, reflecting existing support for roughly 5,000 EMEA employees and local subject matter expertise in the United Kingdom and Germany. The deployment aligned absence records with core Workday HR master data to ensure consistent employee profiles and to feed centralized case management and reporting workflows.
Governance was organized through the centralized GBS HR Services function, with Level 1 HRIS support, structured training and coaching for local HR teams, and scripted testing and audit processes for release governance. Support activities during the rollout included sandbox testing, training delivery, and country integration work that increased incorporated countries from 3 to 20 and were recognized internally for cost reduction and quality improvements.

In 2019, Smith+Nephew deployed Wolters Kluwer CCH Tagetik for Lease Accounting as a core component of its Lease Management capabilities. The Wolters Kluwer CCH Tagetik for Lease Accounting implementation supported lease accounting processes and became the focal point around which the company built end to end operational processes, aligning accounting workflows with lease reporting needs.
